  • Gharaffa QPPSSA Medal Winners Year 5
  • Secondary Showcase Open Day

Dear Parents,

A gold medal was once again brought back by our Year 5 Boys’ Basketball Team on Monday. Well done, boys!  Due to the sporting achievements of our Gharaffa students this term, we are now proudly playing in the finals in May.  We are looking forward to the event which will be held at Qatar Foundation.

With two weeks left before the spring break, there are still many events on our calendar.  Next week, we will be welcoming Jessica Meyer from the New York Juilliard Music and Performing Arts academy to work with Year 1 and Year 6 children.  Parents have also been invited to attend a Music Workshop on Tuesday.  We hope you are able to attend.  The school plans to host numerous academic workshops next year as we recognise the need to work in partnership with our parents.

A quick reminder that our Friends of Compass, Year 1 to Year 6 Blanket Sale will be taking place during the third week of Summer Term.  Our team will be contacting parents with more details.  The aim of the sale is to develop the children’s entrepreneurial skills whilst allowing them to sell toys, games and books which they may no longer require.  The children will be asked to set up their stall on a blanket and all children and parents will have the opportunity to purchase items at the end of the school day.  You may want to start talking to your children about this event, encouraging them to begin sorting out their unwanted toys and consider how they can effectively display and market them.  The children will be asked to purchase a pitch for QR10. Following this, they are allowed to take home any profits.  If you would like to join our Friends of Compass team, the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 11 April.

Following discussions with many parents, we have decided to host our monthly Coffee Mornings on Thursdays at 7 am.  Hopefully, more parents will be able to attend, allowing those parents who have been invited to a class assembly to remain and enjoy their child’s performance. Currently, only 3 to 5 people are attending our Coffee Mornings.  We therefore look forward to meeting more of our parents at these monthly events.  Our next Coffee Morning will be Thursday, 11 May.

Please be informed that the last day for our Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs) is Thursday, 6 April.  The clubs will resume again on Sunday, 30 April and will finish before the Holy Month of Ramadan.  As the ECAs will only run for four weeks, children will remain in their current ECA and will not be expected to sign up.  There will be a couple of changes with Sports Clubs and those parents will be contacted.

Advance notice that school hours during the Holy Month of Ramadan for children will be 8 am to 1 pm.

Years 5 + 6 parents, we look forward to welcoming you to our Secondary Showcase Open Day on Saturday, 1 April.  The Showcase will be held at the Madinat Khalifa Campus and will give parents a valuable insight into the next stage of their child’s academic journey. Parents and children will be invited to enjoy a range of activities during the morning whilst meeting Mr Paul McConnell, Head of Secondary, and Dr Terry Creissen, Executive Principal. The Showcase will be from 10 am - 1 pm and we look forward to seeing you there.

I would like to conclude this newsletter by announcing the arrival of baby Pegrum.  She is a beautiful little girl.  Mum, Rebecca, is an LA in Y3 and Andrew is our Year 1 and 2 Milepost Leader and class teacher.  They will make wonderful parents.  She is a very lucky little girl.  We will announce the name when it has been decided.

On behalf of the Gharaffa team, I wish you all a relaxing, rain-free weekend.

Kind regards,

Karen Wilson
