Arts Academy Application and Audition Requirements

Students may apply for the Arts Academy before their 9th, 10th, or 11th grade year.  The Arts Academy application process allows each student to display their readiness for the admission committee. The committee reviews each student’s completed application and audition results to assess whether they will be successful within the Arts Academy program.

To be considered for admission into the Arts Academy, students will complete the following three steps by April 1, 2020:

1) Application and Documents

  • Online application 
    • Including Resume and Artist Statement
    • Letter of recommendation from an arts professional or educator (outside of NBPS.)

2) Pre-Screen Video or Fine Arts Scholarship Process

  • Pre-screen video (specific requirements below)

OR

  • Fine Arts Scholarship process by February 1

3) Live Audition by invitation

  • On campus Audition/ Call Back required for local students within 50 miles of our campus in Coconut Creek
  • Live Video Audition/ Call Back by appointment

Pre-Screen Auditions

The first round of our selection process for Arts Academy candidates consists of a Pre-Screen Video audition. Theatre, Music and Dance candidates will submit a pre-screen video audition that demonstrates their best work (see below requirements).  Videos should be submitted by email to Robyn Hollander via youtube link or a link to a file sharing service (i.e. google docs, dropbox, wetransfer) by April 1, 2020. 

Selection and Notification

Following the pre-screen review process, all candidates will be notified whether they will be invited to On Campus auditions by Friday, April 17, 2020.

Audition Requirements

Dance     +/-

Pre-Screen Video:

  • One 2 minute solo - ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop 

On Campus* Audition:

  • One 2 minute solo - ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop (must provide own musical accompaniment on a mobile device)
  •  Participate in a fundamental technique assessment: Perform a ballet combination, progressions across the floor, and a jazz combination.
  • Callback(by invitation) for technique and workshop class and interview.

Additional Audition Guidance: Our goal is to view your technical and performance skills during both the pre-screen and on campus auditions.  As such, for both pre-screen and on campus auditions, please select the solo style that presents you in the best light.  Dancers will need to bring all dance shoes to the audition . Female dancers wear black leotards, with black leggings, hair in a bun.  Male dancers wear black jazz pants, white t-shirt.

*Students who have earned a Fine Arts Scholarship are offered the option to choose the Arts Academy Program during their course counseling meeting and will be invited to the callback and interview.

Music     +/-

Pre-Screen Video: 

  • All Music Applicants: Perform 2 solos of contrasting styles from standard repertoire.

On Campus Audition*: 

(All music applicants)

  • Perform 2 solos of contrasting styles from standard repertoire.
    • Preferably from memory.
    • Vocalists must provide own musical accompaniment on a mobile device or sheet music for a provided accompanist.
  • Fundamental Skills Assessments: Scales, Sight read, Echo sing & echo play, Sight sing, theory knowledge
  • Callback(by invitation) for technique class and interview. 

Additional Audition Guidance: Our goal is to view your technical and performance skills during both the pre-screen and on campus auditions.  As such, for both pre-screen and on campus auditions, please select solo music that demonstrates the full extent of your abilities, so that you  may present yourself in the best light. For the on-campus audition, please bring 3 copies of your selected solo pieces ( with measures numbered) for the panel.  Accompanists are not required, although you may choose to bring one with you to the audition. No pre-recorded or digital accompaniment will be accepted.

*Students who have earned a Fine Arts Scholarship are offered the option to choose the Arts Academy Program during their course counseling meeting and will be invited to the callback and interview.

Theatre      +/-

Pre-Screen Video: 

  • One memorized monologue and one song from a published musical.

On Campus* Audition:

  • One memorized monologue and one song from a published musical (must provide own musical accompaniment on a mobile device)
  • Fundamental skills assessment: cold read, sight read, echo sing, and dance audition.
  • Callback (by invitation) for interview and workshop.

Additional Audition Guidance: Monologues and songs should be selected from standard, published repertoire-original works are not accepted.  Please have a thorough understanding of the larger piece and the characters you are portraying, making sure you select pieces that are appropriate for your age and life experience. Avoid pieces that involve dialects and character voices. Our goal is to see you at your best, so select material that will present you in your best light.

*Students located more than 50 miles from NBPS or those situated outside of the United States may request to audition via Skype or other digital means.
