Dr. Welstead has a BA degree in Biology, an MEd in Mathematics Education and a PhD in Education. She has taught the IGCSE, IB and American curricula in Italy, Portugal, Czech Republic, United States and Hong Kong, and has served as Head of Department, Dean of Students, CAS Coordinator and Chair of the ECIS Service Learning Committee.
My approach to education is focused on the development of resourceful, resilient, responsible and respectful young people who understand and appreciate the diversity and similarities within the global community. I believe the key elements of my teaching are an open mind and the ability to see things from perspectives other than one's own, the development of appropriate, caring relationships with my students, the modelling of integrity and empathy, and a passion for my subject and for my school.
The hallmarks of my classroom are kindness, humour, high expectations and a willingness to do everything to help students achieve them. I encourage students to make connections between topics within the subject, between mathematics and other subjects, and between what they are learning in school and real life (especially this!)
I consider Portugal to be my permanent home. However, I moved to Hong Kong in 2011 and have no plans to leave. I enjoy many activities here, including outrigger canoeing, dragon boating and singing in the Bach Choir.
