Hello Village Families!

It’s official - we’ve made it through the first few weeks of school and are well on our way to an exciting 2018-2019 school year.  Whether you have just arrived at Village and are as new as the swimming pool, or have been around longer than the high school, we are pleased to welcome you all to our vibrant and growing community. I am very happy to serve as President of the Village School Parents Association this year and am eager to remind you that ALL of us, as parents and guardians of students at The Village School, are members of VSPA.

As I sit writing this and hear a passing thunderstorm outside, I’m reminded that last year at this time, many in our Village community suffered the effects of Hurricane Harvey. Having been in Houston for only a year at the time, I was proud to find that my family had joined a school community endlessly willing to offer support and assistance to each other in some of the most trying circumstances.  The generosity displayed by Village families, some of whom were suddenly homeless themselves, or had their businesses utterly devastated, was something I will always remember. It was nothing short of awe-inspiring to witness such a large and diverse group come together so quickly and seamlessly. It was also a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together.

Harvey serves as a reminder of how much a school can bring families together, and we on the VSPA Board are excited to embark on a new year of community-building and growth. We are dedicated to effective communication and do hope that you will appreciate the many avenues available to receive and exchange information, including email, ParentSquare, Facebook, the bi-weekly VSPA News, and our VSPA General Meetings held throughout the year. We encourage parents and guardians to reach out to us with questions, or to share a concern, and to volunteer at school as your schedules permit. Please also consider joining one of our many parent-led social groups. If you’re new to Village this year, please don’t be shy--two short years ago I found myself exactly where you are, and by reaching out and getting involved I found a wonderful network of friends and colleagues who have enriched my whole family’s experience, both in and out of school.

Thanks to all of you who made our Back to School Breakfast on the first day of school such a resounding success.  I hope to meet and work together with many more of you very soon. Please join us in looking forward to a new school year filled with much promise and wonderful memories.
