Mental Health Resources: Stress Management, Problem Solving Skills and More

Cope effectively with stress, develop emotional intelligence, strengthen grit and resiliency skills, and engage in creative problem-solving skills

The below are a few resources on mental wellness. If you have questions on these strategies, or want to share your story, experiences, or thoughts on the Village Wellness Department's Spotlight Blog, email me!

Stress Management

Emotional Intelligence
  • What is Emotional Intelligence? (Psychology). Read about the definition, history, and measures of emotional intelligence.
  • Quiz Yourself: Do You Lead with Emotional Intelligence?(Harvard Business Review). Gain a deeper understanding of your own emotional intelligence skillset by engaging with this quiz.
  • Critical Thinking and Emotional Intelligence (The Foundation for Critical Thinking). An excellent article that explores whether emotions can be labelled as "intelligent" and whether there is such a thing as emotional intelligence.
  • Emotional Intelligence: The Social Skills You Weren't Taught in School (LifeHacker). Learn about self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy, and social skills. At Village, we discuss and practice all of these in our stress management classes!
  • Can Emotional Intelligence Be Taught? (NYTimes). How exactly do you calm down when you're feeling anxious? Where do you learn the skills to manage your feelings?

Grit and Resilience

Creative Problem-Solving Skills
  • Creative Approaches to Problem Solving (Sage Pub). A longer chapter on defining creativity and relating it to problem solving.
  • How to Be a Creative Problem Solver (WSJ). Creativity doesn't have to mean painting a great canvas. Learn how to generate good ideas, or ways to improve a current system.
  • Idea Generation: What is Creative Problem Solving?  (Entrepreneurial Insights). This article discusses creative problem solving (CPS), as well as gives stages and models of CPS.
  • 10 Team-Building Games That Promote Critical Thinking (Teach Thought). Education does not begin and end with a textbook or test. These games promote cooperation and communication, help establish a positive classroom environment -- and provide a fun reprieve from routine!
  • Teaching Creativity and Inventive Problem Solving in Science(DeHaan). DeHaan, who studied the electrophysiology of heartbeats and who founded the Emory Center for Ethics, explores the relationship between creativity and higher-order cognitive skills, reviews assessment methods, and describes several instructional strategies for enhancing creative problem solving in the college classroom. Very relevant for Village as a rigorous high school!
