Eco-Schools Project

This year, 16 Eco Warriors from Year 5 and 6 are working with Ms Pfortner to make our school a more eco-friendly place.

Our goals for this year are to reduce the amount of single-use plastic that is currently used at school. We would also like to develop the recycling system at BSKL and raise awareness of broader environmental issues.

With the vision to make BSKL greener, we are happy to announce that Sodexo will stop using straws at their cafes from Saturday 1st December 2018 and will provide bio straws for customers who absolutely need them. They are also looking into sustainable alternatives such as bamboo or metal straws - customers who need straws regularly will be able to purchase one or use one for a small deposit. We are very pleased to be making this step towards a greener BSKL. Around 31 million plastic straws are used in Malaysia every day and each straw takes hundreds of years to degrade. We will be encouraging the children to do everything they can to reduce the amount of plastic waste they produce, we hope you will be able to help too.

Upcycling Enrichment

On Thursday 22nd November we had the opportunity to visit Mereka, an upcycling centre full of fascinating creations. They had a lot of crafts, hand made decorations, recycled jewellery and many more things. We also learnt that fashion waste is is one of the biggest world wide problems.

Students then had a chance to create their own beautiful art pieces: earrings, necklaces and bracelets using old parts of electronic devices such as wires, chips and batteries. Everyone had a spectacular time upcycling old pieces.
