Term 2 Community Clubs

03 March 2016

Community Chess Club

What a great second term of Community Chess Club we are having! We have built on the success of Term 1, when all of our visitors from Binh Trieu School learnt the rules of the game. Many children from An Phu Primary campus learnt how to play alongside them and have returned for a second term, along with some newcomers. Now, our guests are at an intermediate level and everyone in the club is able to play full, competitive games. We often take breaks from playing to check out interesting things that are going on in our friend’s games, such as ‘stalemate’ and ‘checkmate’ situations.

By the end of the term we hope to have created a mini-league for all of the club members to track their progress. The best part of the club is making new friends with children from outside of BIS. The children from Binh Trieu have learnt some technical vocabulary in the English language, and the club members from AP1 have found ways of communicating and showing sportsmanship with non-English speakers. It’s easy to get on when we all speak the language of chess!

Hula Hoop Club

This is a brand new Community Club being offered for the first time in Term 2!  We have had fun with the hula hoops in so many ways!  Joined by students from Binh Loi School, students in Year 3-4 have been learning the basics of how to hula hoop, along with a few new tricks.  Every student can now hoop around their waist, and they have even been holding time competitions to see who can hoop the longest.

Each week, we play a different game with the hula hoops, including teamwork games, partner games, and games involving speed and skill.  At the end of every club session, we hold a Hoop Jam, where each person can show off a new skill or trick that they have learned!
