Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 15/12/2017

15 December 2017

Dear Parents,

As last week’s thrilling Christmas Concert was a spectacular feast of music and festive spirit this week’s Sports Day was a spectacular show of comradery and school spirit. The reds, blues, greens and yellows of our house flags and shirts filled the stand at the Thống Nhất stadium as did the combined voices of our House teams supporting their team mates on. Several school records were broken on track and field as students challenged each other to perform at their very best. Whilst this is to be applauded (and it was...very loudly!) the day was also very much about getting involved and so all our students took to the field in the morning as athletes together. The level of mutual support and encouragement on show was breathtaking and so many moments during the day made us all feel very proud of our house teams - and so I begin this final newsletter of the term with huge congratulations for the athletes of Dalat, Hue, Hanoi and Saigon Houses!

Inter House Sports Day

From our PE team...

The annual Inter House Sports Day was once again a day to remember for everyone involved. The stadium was awash with colour, friendly competition, determination and house pride.  Each student strived to burn every calorie in each running, throwing and jumping event to earn valuable house points so that their house could be crowned champions of 2017. Well done to all students who took part: you made it the successful, spectacular day that it was. Special thanks to staff and 6th form students, without whom the event wouldn’t be possible.

Who were victorious? Were Dalat dominant on the day? Were Hanoi happy with the outcome? Were Hue humble in winning? Were Saigon super sporting stars? We found out the answer to our questions in this morning’s final day couldn’t have been closer!

The results are as follows:

Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

It was an exciting few days at the beautiful Bangkok Patana 50m outdoor pool for the Bangkok Feeding Frenzy 2018.   There were some excellent performances at all levels and a big congratulations goes to the whole team for their efforts, with the BIS Barracudas being awarded second place for most effective team.  In a fitting end to a long swimming career at the Frenzy, Jeremie Luong collected the first place award.  Read all about the efforts of the team over the weekend of the Bangkok Feeding Frenzy swimming competition.

Mai Tam Christmas Party

Last week our 10I and 10B Form groups hosted the first of three parties for children from Mai Tam House of Hope.

These Year 10 classes planned and hosted the party for the group of about 30 children of varying ages. It is especially rewarding to see our students investing so much passion and commitment to offering the children from Mai Tam a wonderful time.

The Starry Night of Ambitious Bookworms - Library Sleepover 2017

Last Friday night, the APS student library leaders held a Library Sleepover (aka The Starry Night of Ambitious Bookworms) and created a magical evening of wonderfully bookish fun!

The night’s activities ranged from bookmark competitions, to readers hunts and elegantly executed performances of students favourite book excerpts! In preparation for the event BIS HCMC's student librarians put in hours of their time transforming the library into a sensational event.

Extra-Curricular Activity Selection, Term 2, 2017-18

It is that time of year when we look forward to Term 2 and begin thinking about ECA selection again. With over one hundred different clubs to choose from each week, we would like to encourage you to become actively involved in at least one of the activities available in each of the three CAS strands of Creativity, Activity and Service.

In Term 2 you will have the opportunity to sign up for several new activities such as Dance Throughout History, CrossFit Thao Dien, Pottery Class and The Caterers Academy Cookery Class.  There are also students who will be leading exciting clubs such as Technovation, AP1 Maths Tutoring and the Chemistry Club. These are just a few of the extensive range of activities available. To see the full list of all the Term 2 ECA’s on offer, please take a look at the An Phu Secondary Activities Handbook.

Log on to CHQ at and make your selection now!

And remember, CHQ will be available for ECA selection throughout the December holidays, so if you change your mind or decide to add another club, you will still be able to do so until Wednesday 10th January 2018.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday and a very Happy New!

Tracey Brownrigg,Co-curricular Coordinator

Spotlight on Learning: BIS HCMC Heroes

In this week’s Spotlight on Learning, Mr Lee Falconer is inspired by the approach of some of our Year 8 students towards teaching their younger peers from the primary campus and muses on the meaning of ‘hero’.

Through applying the characteristics in our Aide Memoire our students are showing great leadership and well on their way to becoming BIS HCMC Heroes says Mr Falconer.

Project Aware Campaign 2018

Our IB students continue to work on building awareness and raising funds for their Community Partners for their CAS projects.

Last week it was the turn of the Project Aware CAS group, who advocated and raised funds for the protection of our marine environment in support of BIS HCMC’s Community Partner Project Aware. To read more about the Project Aware group and their  campaign please read the blog.

Community Football Tournament

Last Sunday saw the return of the highly anticipated annual Community Football Tournament.

This event is a wonderful occasion for our BIS HCMC students to participate in a fun and competitive environment alongside children from a range of our community partners.

We were also very fortunate to have the support from our dedicated year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students, who helped coach and support the teams throughout the morning.

Thien Phuoc Christmas Party

BIS HCMC had a lovely time visiting Thien Phuoc Foster Home this week for our annual Christmas party. Staff and students from all three campuses went to spread some holiday merriment to the children living at Thien Phuoc.  The Harmony Choir from AP1 sang several carols and put everyone in a joyful mood! Students from Helping Hands Club at both APP and APS came along to see their friends at Thien Phuoc one more time before the Christmas holidays.

Tet Shoe Box Appeal 2018 - Season of Giving

I would like to share with you the Tet Shoebox Appeal 2018.

Tết is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture, honouring the arrival of spring. Each year at this time families are invited to offer support for our community partners through the donation of items that will make a positive difference in their celebrations.

This year, we will be introducing the concept of a Tet gift from us in the form of a shoe box for each child, similar to the Christmas Shoe Box Appeals in the UK. I look forward to seeing many of our students and families take part.
