Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 03/03/2017

03 March 2017

This week has seen our FOBISIA Drama students depart for their long awaited trip to Thailand to take part in the festival which takes place at Bromsgrove International School. Our Year 12 Geography students also left this week for their trip to Dalat to complete some of the practical elements of the IB Geography course. Our MUN students have also departed for their trip to the 2017 UNIS Model United Nations Conference which takes place in Hanoi. I look forward to sharing an update on their trips with you in next week’s newsletter. I begin this week with very exciting news regarding the planned opening of our new infant campus:

New BIS HCMC Infant Campus

Many of you may already be aware of an exciting new phase of development for our school.  A purpose-designed Infant Campus is currently under construction in District 2.  This new facility will cater for children from Fundinotots through to Year 2.  On completion, our An Phu and Tu Xuong Primary campuses will amalgamate, which will afford an enhanced learning environment for all our Primary students and teachers and will boast many significant environmentally friendly features and creative learning spaces.

This will also mean that all three of our BIS HCMC campuses will be conveniently based in District 2. The new building is planned to open in January 2018.  We will continue to keep you updated with all related progress.

PTG Parent Social Evening

The Secondary Parent Teacher Group hosts its next social evening on Thursday 9 March from 7 to 10pm at The Boathouse in BP Compound. Whatever the Weather - Spring Music Concert

Spring Concert BIS HCMC

Our Music department put on a wonderful event on Thursday evening when students from APS, APP and TX performed together at our spring concert 'Whatever the Weather' in Ben Thanh theatre. The evening consisted of a wide range of exciting music, from TX choir and orchestra’s rendition of Bill Withers 'Ain’t No Sunshine' to APP's 'You'll Never Walk alone' and APS's orchestral version of 'Another Day of Sun' from the movie 'La la Land'. My congratulations go to Mr Ian Alexander, Head of Music, our music teachers and support staff who put so much effort into an event such as this. Congratulations as well to the many talented musicians we have here at BIS HCMC who put on an outstanding performance. It was indeed an evening to remember.

Term 2 Student Leadership Update

I am exceptionally proud of our Head Student Leadership Team and the wonderful job they have been doing in supporting the various committees and student council groups. One of the most important features of any school is to make sure that students are happy and given a chance to voice their opinions. Haeon Yoon, Steven Vo, Steve Ko, and Saanya Mishra,  who form our BIS HCMC Head Team 2016-17, give us an overview of the progress made this term in various areas of the school.

Year 12 Parent Coffee Morning & University Information Evenings

If you missed these events, held recently, the presentations together with lots of other useful information, are available on the BIS HCMC University Guidance section of our website.

World Book Day!

English Department BIS HCMC

Today we celebrated World Book Day by using one of our lessons simply to enjoy the pleasure of reading. We participated in Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) for one lesson, and every student and teacher simply read a book which they bought in from home or took out from the library. The APS teaching staff celebrated the day by dressing up as characters from the book ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar, much to the delight of the Year 7 students! Our website features an article on why our English teachers think reading is so important for students as well as adults.

New Practical Maths Club - APS & APP Join Forces

Practical Maths Club (6)

Our Year 12 students have been spreading the love of maths across the campus by joining up with the Year 4,5 & 6 students in a new Practical Maths Club which takes place each each week at the An Phu Primary Campus. Jeong Min, a Year 6 student reports back on how much the students enjoyed the club.

Diary The Year 12 Dive Trip 2017

Diving 2017

Tue Minh Nguyen from Year 12 shares the details of his dive trip to Puerto Galera completed during trips week. This is one of our most popular trips offered to Year 12 students and the experience often sets the scene for a life long love of the sea and diving. The article also includes a video of the student’s experiences. As part of the trip the students also participated in the Dive Against Debris which encourages the diving community to become involved in clearing up our oceans. A community service visit to a local school where the students helped out with a lesson led to an exciting Friday morning at school for the local students.

Football Boot Collection

If you have any used football boots which your children have outgrown, the An Phu Primary Campus is organising a collection of boots for some of our community service partners. Boots can be handed in at the Secondary reception or at the Community Services office on the first floor. Thank you so much to those families who have already donated some boots which their children were no longer using.
