Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 02/11/2018

Dear Parents,

The return after the midterm break has brought with it so much activity and excitement, if that’s possible after our wonderful International Day at the end of last half term. On a related note a big thanks you to our Thai parents and the PTG for continuing the intercultural sharing and arranging this month’s celebration of great food from around the world in the Cafeteria.

The SISAC City Championships during this week have offered our sporting teams a chance to compete against other international schools in a range of sports, a full round up of these will follow next Tuesday’s championship culmination with the grueling U14-U19 Cross Country run.

Our students get a great deal from the University visits programme and this week we welcomed a Yale-NUS College visit. Look out for next week’s visits including Utrecht University, University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest and Yonsei University.

It has been an eventful time for our Year 13 students as we have passed two of the major deadlines in the university application calendar; for the Oxford, Cambridge and Medical applicants through UCAS and Early Action/Early Decision for US and some Canadian universities. This year the early applicants were applying to a range of universities including UPenn, MIT, Caltech, NYU to name just a few, so once again our students are aiming high!  UK conditional offers have started to come in from the pool of early student applications too – very exciting times indeed.

As you read this our Year 11 Geographers will be embarking on a long weekend of fieldwork in Mui Ne to practise and refine their practical geographical skills – some things are best learned out of the classroom!

We also wish our students who have been preparing hard for their ABRSM music exams on Saturday morning – you all have our best wishes for the success you deserve.

So, as you can see we really have hit the ground running…musically, academically, gastronomically and literally.

Please enjoy the update that follows.

Overview of the week’s activities

STEAM and Sustainability Become a Part of International Day

International Day celebrates the wide cultural diversity of our BIS community and our students’ role as global citizens. The day broadens students’ horizons and affords opportunities for them to learn more about their contemporaries’ cultures, food and languages, while forming a greater understanding of their own place in the wider community.

This year brought some big changes to one of our favourite days, including the incorporation of a International STEAM Carnival for the first time and some innovative and creative solutions for a Healthy and Sustainable Global Cafe.

Dyslexia Awareness Week- Students Respond to the Decoding Challenge

Through our health, wellbeing, and social activities during the school week, we are continually working to encourage our students to better understand and empathise with others.  It is very positive to see how students who attempted the Decoding Challenge for Dyslexia Awareness Week were able to take away a deeper level of understanding of how dyslexia can impact an individual’s life.
