Developing emotional resilience in young children

Over 75 parents attended the Emotional Resilience Coffee Morning at the EY&I Campus to discover more about how we are equipping our younger children with the tools for dealing with the unavoidable stresses that life brings.

By following the Partnership for Children’s  program ‘Zippy’s Friends’ (Year 1 and Year 2) and ‘Apple’s Friend’s’ (Year 3), the students’ weekly lessons are providing the opportunity to develop their understanding of different emotions and how best to deal with them.

Zippy and Apple teach the children that when there is a problem, the best way to solve it is to:

  1. Calm down
  2. Understand the problem
  3. Think of lots of solutions
  4. Choose the best one

The importance of clear communication is also highlighted. Children are practising saying how they feel and why. A good solution must make the child feel better and not hurt them or anyone else.

By embedding these strategies at an early age, we hope the children will be better equipped to conquer the challenges that they face.
