Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 06/04/2018

06 April 2018

Dear Parents,

Time seems to speed up when there is a lot happening in life don’t you think?

Have you read any of Ray Kurzweil's books about nano-tech, bio-tech, or the possibility of uploading our minds to more durable machines? As an author, innovator and futurist he has certainly captured the imagination of many. What interests me is his suggestion that into the future we could speed up our minds and hold more and more experience in each second of real time.

This is certainly a skill we needed on campus this week.

Our happiness themed activities throughout the week added so much extra levity and smiles to campus life. Following uplifting assemblies our students have been trying extra yoga sessions and happiness fairs and events all arranged by our student events committee who have done a great job.

The parent teacher social event on Wednesday was a wonderful evening of relaxed conversation and complemented our Tuesday parent workshop which explored our approach to assessment in Key Stage 3. Our teacher team were also treated to a workshop on Tuesday as our University Guidance Team led us all through a session on those all important letters of recommendation and references to support Sixth Form students’ University applications. Then on Thursday evening our audience of students, teachers and parents for the Saigon Enterprise Challenge were so impressed by the levels of entrepreneurial skill on show. On Friday morning we celebrated the culmination of the hotly contested Sixth Form Debatathlon when our two teams of finalists made the case for and against, “Nuclear power is the best solution to the world’s energy problems”. At lunchtime just as we thought the week was drawing to a close the Theatre was filled with sounds of happiness, joy, laughter and celebration as we unveiled ‘Teacher’s Got Talent’. The musical, dance and circus talents on show alongside the comics and many others once again reminded me why I enjoy working with this group of teachers - they aren’t afraid to get up and give things a go, take a risk and try new things out.

In a week that really has offered something for everyone in our community I hope you enjoy this update...

Year 10 International Award Students Complete Qualifying Expedition

Year 10 IA

An international education here at BIS often goes beyond the school walls. Through co-curricular activities, international trips and opportunities such as the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, our students acquire real-life skills that will allow them to flourish well beyond their school days.

The International Award encourages participants to look within and create personal goals rather than a sense of competition.  Some of our Year 10 students have just returned from their very successful Bronze Award qualifying expedition in Dalat and Mr Alex Essery shares a brief update of the Year 10 IA Trip 2018.

SAIMUN 2018- ‘Unite to Progress’

Considering the nature of our world’s rapid growth, change and conflict, cooperation amongst nations is essential to ensuring a future where we resolve our issues and all infringements upon human rights cease to exist.

Vy Nguyen and Nina Pham

‘Unite to Progress’, the theme of this year’s SAIMUN conference, led to  insightful debate surrounding issues that may inhibit global development.

This weekend BIS HCMC was represented by 42 delegates with a variety of experience. Please read this eloquent summary of the SAIMUN Conference from Year 11 SAIMUN delegates, Vy Nguyen and Nina Pham.  SAIMUN 2018- Unite to Progress

A special note of congratulations musty go to….one of our delegates, Victoria Fethke, who triumphantly and rather spectacularly passed her resolution in General Assembly II with 35 votes for, 0 votes against and 0 abstentions – a remarkable success which is almost unheard of in the competitive committees of MUN.

Student Maths Leaders host Masterclasses for our Year 6 Students

The Student Maths Leaders, a team of Year 12 students with a desire to spread our passion for Maths in BIS HCMC have organised interactive and practical Maths Masterclasses for Year 6 students to foster their passion for problem solving and Maths.

What are AREs and what do they mean for your child?

Parents of our Key Stage 3 students, from Year 7 to Year 9, were welcomed to the Secondary Campus this week for an Assessment Workshop, to gain a greater insight into the changes that have taken place as we have introduced our Age-Related Expectations (AREs).

Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs Amy Murphy, along with a number of our Heads of Department, provided an overview of the new assessment guidelines and offered parents an opportunity to review subject specific criteria.

Year 12 CAS working with Pouisseres de Vie

As our Year 12 students continue to work with their community partners for their IB CAS projects, it was wonderful to see this group of students working on the Pouisseres de Vie campaign who were able to hand over a donation of 17,211,000VND this week!  Great work Year 12.

Year 12 CAS Pouisseres

Hanna from PdV was truly impressed by the commitment our students had shown to raising awareness and funds for PdV. The money is intended to buy uniforms for the children at the PdV Phan Huy Ich School.

Well done again to all students involved in this campaign, your hard work and commitment really does make a difference to our community.
