Mr Simon Higham: Weekly Update 25/05/18

25 May 2018

As a Headteacher, I have many proud moments related to our school and last night was one such occasion. Watching our Junior Production Club’s presentation of ‘The Jungle Book’ gave me such an immense sense of pride in all that our children and staff have achieved in a relatively short amount of time since the amalgamation.

PTG Coffee Morning 17-9500

I know those that watched the performance will agree that it was a spectacular show. From the set to the costumes, the dancing and acting meant that there was more than one parent with a tear in their eye last night.  Here at BIS HCMC we have always believed that education goes well beyond the classroom door and last night’s performance was testament to this.

My sincere thanks to all the teachers involved, both EY&IC and Junior staff coming together as one school to work together. Please find links below to read more about this wonderful performance as well as many other happenings across our school in recent weeks.

Draft Class Lists Out to Parents

On Monday 28th May, all parents of children who are currently in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 will receive a copy of the first drafts of the new class lists for 2018/19. These lists have been agreed by our teachers by considering a range of factors which include a balance of gender, ability, nationality, behaviour, learning support, language competency and social groupings.

Next week, please take time to talk this list through with your child. If you would like to discuss any educational issues with your child’s class teacher relating to their placement for next year, please contact them directly to arrange a meeting before 3.00pm on Friday 1st June. Once this deadline has passed and all suggestions have been received, the final lists will be prepared by adding new students, room allocations and class teachers.

Final lists will then be published to parents on Friday 22nd June, one week before the end of the academic year.

Please note that these lists are subject to change due to circumstances beyond our control, including the unexpected/late withdrawal of a child from school. In addition, please be aware that some year groups have a natural imbalance between boys and girls. Appropriate measures have been made to allocate an even number of boys and girls across all classes. Finally, some draft lists may seem imbalanced in number. This is due to the allocation of new students prior to the commencement of the new academic year.

(Please note that our current Year 6 children will be informed of their new class during the Secondary Transition Day on Thursday 7th June.)

We thank you for your support and understanding in what is always a very worthwhile process.

End of Year Uniform Collection

Pop up shop uniform upcycling

Do you currently have old uniform that you no longer use? Or are you preparing for next year and need somewhere for all of this year’s old uniform to go?

Our thriving upcycling project needs your old uniform. Simply bring it into school and deposit all uniform items in the collection bins provided. These are situated along the office corridor and outside of the Canteen.

Together, we can continue to make a difference!

Year 2’s Amazing Creative Writing

Year 2 - Talk for Writing(1)

The 'Magic Finger' by Roald Dahl is a humorous, engaging story that Year 2 classes have loved sharing together. Using the 3 stages of the Talk for Writing process; imitation, innovation and invention find out how the book has been used as a stimulus for creative writing in this post by Mr Matthew Dudley.

Managing our Traffic Together

Drivers Code of Conduct

Following Mr Anthony’s email to all parents this week, we have continued to distribute a newly updated Driver’s Code of Conduct to all those who drive to school both at drop off and pick up times. With key information in both English and Vietnamese, we aim to further educate our drivers to make better choices when they enter the areas around our school campuses and within the Thao Dien area as a whole.

Please take time to talk to your drivers about this and ensure that it is visible in your car at all times. This will serve as a reminder about our expectations for all drivers when they are bringing children to school in the morning and picking them up at the end of the day.

Saturday Football

We have various Saturday Morning Football updates and information!

1. There is Saturday Football on Saturday 26th May

As usual our Year 4,5,6 teams will train from 8-9am on the large field and Year 2,3 from 9-10am on the small field. The nurse will not be present again. Coach Andy will have a basic first aid kit and will be able to contact parents in the unlikely event of a problem. Any parents who are concerned would be advised to keep their children away from training.

2. Save the Date!

Saturday Morning Football will host a “Family Fun Day” on Saturday 2nd June from 8am - 12o’clock. There will be matches, kids vs parents matches, challenges and races! Come along and enjoy this fun day!

3. Coach Andy is Moving On!

Next season, Andy will no longer be running Saturday Morning Football.

Please volunteer to coach and keep the sessions fun and enjoyable for the parents and kids! SMF will need coaches to help with Year 2,3 and Yearr 4,5 and 6 sessions. If you can spare a Saturday morning, please visit the Main Office located at the Junior Campus to find out more.

For all footballers:

Please ensure your child wears long socks and shin pads, a number of children have not worn these over recent weeks.

Fee Payment and Registration Forms

Thank you very much to all parents who have completed a registration form and made payment of the fee. A reminder that the fee is VND500k with a football kit and reduced to VND350k if your child re-uses their kit from last year. We will check all registration forms and issue an appropriate refund if a parent has paid the higher fee before the discounted amount was announced.

Shin Pads and Long Socks

Please ensure that your child always wears suitable long football socks and shin pads (they can be bought at the school shop or local sports shop). This prevents injury.

Coaches needed for Y2/3 and 4/5/6 & Administration Volunteers

We are still looking for more Parent Coaches for the Y2/3 and Y4/5/6 teams. For each year group we want to make small coach teams (with parent and student coaches) so we/you are more flexible in case of you have to travel/have other commitments. Don’t worry too much about experience, as you will work in a team. Let us know if you can run one session and/or help to run a session each week.

*Please remember children need to wear sports kit.

*Please remember all children need shin pads with football socks to protect their legs.

*Please remember they must bring a water bottle.

*Hat or cap is optional

*You can buy Football socks from the BIS Uniform Shop, or any sports shop.

*For parents who are unable to stay throughout the whole training, would appreciate to arrive 10 minutes before your children's session ends to pick them.

*Please remind children if they are wearing football boots, they are not allowed in the basketball court and the playground area as their boots might damage the floor surfaces.
