Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 04/05/2018

04 May 2018

Dear Parents,

Welcome back after what I hope was a lovely break for you and your family.

The term ahead promises to be another wonderful time on campus with a wealth of opportunities in store to enthuse your children and enrich their learning whatever their age.

The action began straight away in the Drama department this week as we were delighted to welcome back to BIS, The Kagools, an award winning physical theatre comedy duo. The Kagools always do a great job of extending our drama students skills and create such an enjoyable environment to learn in. You may also remember the huge interest shown by our youngest innovators who demonstrated their inventive minds and design skills as they applied to join our STEAM trip of a lifetime to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last term. Well now our successful Year 7 students are at MIT in the labs and makerspaces and lecture theatres and their experience so far has proven to be potentially life changing. We also wished our Year 13 a fond campus farewell before the break and now they have embarked on their IB exams alongside their Year 11 peers who also began their exams during the break. Our best wishes to all students and families facing their exams in the coming weeks - all the hard work will pay off.

Introducing our BIS HCMC Ambassadors to the UN 2018

At the very end of our last term we were excited to announce and introduce our next BIS Ambassador team to the UN for 2018.

Find out a little more about our UN Global Ambassadors, Doan Nguyen (Y12), Vy Nguyen (Y11) and Ashley Lee (Y10) as they prepare for their attendance at the UN Higher Level Political Forum in New York by reading their story and watching their introduction videos…

Success Stories: Sanny Wu Awarded ABRSM Diploma

During the Easter holidays Sanny Wu had an important function to attend in Singapore, alongside some of Asia’s most talented young musicians she received her ABRSM Diploma.  Find out more about Sanny’s passion for music and her journey to achieving her ABRSM Diploma last academic year.

Congratulations from us all Sanny!

Right now two of our Year 7 students, Anya and David, along with Naomi and Matheo from Year 6, are on the trip of a lifetime in Massachusetts, taking part in STEAM Week @ MIT.

An interesting fact unknown to many about MIT is its motto, “mind and hand”, or Mens et Manus in Latin.

While we wait for an update from our returning students, take a look at what NAE’s  Mark Orrow-Whiting thinks about the “mind and hand” philosophy.

These four young innovators have been testing their creative problem solving in different areas of technology, spending time and learning with inspirational MIT students and academics as well as having great fun expanding their horizons in Massachusetts - we can’t wait to hear all about it on their return to BIS next week.

Aussie cuisine comes to the Underground - May 15th to 17th

Our third PTG National Cuisine week is coming soon, with some good old Aussie Tucker available in the Underground and perhaps an ANZAC bikkie or two on offer in the BIStro.

The Combined Campus PTG AGM will be held on Thursday 17th May and all parents and available teachers are encouraged to attend where possible.  The meeting will be held at the Junior Campus in the MPR and we will hear from the current Parent Teacher Group (PTG) committees of all three campuses about all of the wonderful events held this year.

The  PTG is an important part of the BIS community, adding to the life of the school with a variety of fun, social and fundraising events throughout the year.  I would like to say a huge thank you to this year’s Secondary Campus PTG Committee, Christine, Shweta, Anu, Gus, Rob, Mel, Odyl and Arie and team for all of their work so far - this team have achieved so much this year and in such a creative way.  We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible again next year.

Nominations for committee positions will begin shortly and we look forward to hearing from anyone who would be interested in being involved.
