BIS Grand Prix 2018

On Friday 8th June 2018, our F1 in Schools World Finalists Nam Phong Racing successfully hosted the inaugural BIS Grand Prix. The event engaged both primary and secondary students aged 9-12 years old. Their task was to design and manufacture the fastest miniature F1 car possible, emulating the design and engineering processes employed by real F1 racing teams.

This inter-school competition was the first event of its kind in Vietnam, bringing together 60 students from 4 international schools around Saigon. The aim of the event was to introduce students in Ho Chi Minh City to the award-winning global educational initiative; F1 in Schools.

Throughout the event, Nam Phong Racing arranged a wide range of activities designed to emulate the process of reaching the World Finals. We catch up with the team as they provide a round up of the day's events:

Prior to the competition, teams of four to six students were formed. They were then allocated different roles according to the needs of the team, i.e. Team Manager, Graphics Designer, Manufacturing Engineer and Design Engineer; just like in a real F1 in Schools team. They then collectively designed a team logo and established their team identity and branding by choosing theme colours and creating fitting visuals.

Through the BIS Grand Prix we hope to have ignited passion in  the next generation of F1 in Schools pioneers as we believe it is an incredible opportunity for students to challenge themselves, grow personally and engage with their interests outside the classroom.

The second session was car design and manufacturing - the engineers designed their car in an aerodynamically efficient way and manufactured their own model F1 cars out of laser-cut paper nets. They finished their cars with their logo and effective visuals to enforce their branding strategy and incorporated logo stickers of our F1 in Schools sponsors such as Audi, Lan Rung Resort, Quoc Cuong Gia Lai and Jetstar.

Lastly, the most exciting part! Teams were summoned one-by-one to the racetrack. The finishing time of the cars was determined by the effectiveness of the aerodynamics of the car as well as the racer’s reaction time. The tension and team spirit was very high as the time difference determining if a team would qualify for the next round was at times only a thousandth of a second! Teams that were not racing worked on their pit displays - a board presenting different elements of the competition such as branding and car design.

There were a variety of awards available for the best teams. The 1st Fastest Car, 2nd Fastest Car and 3rd Fastest Car were each awarded trophies for their outstanding achievement. The team with the Best Pit Display was awarded a trophy for their creativity and cohesive presentation, whilst the team with the Best Team Identity were given a trophy for their collaborative skills and clear branding.

The BIS Grand Prix encouraged students to think outside the box, be creative and take risks. They used their collaboration, communication and leadership skills to apply their knowledge learned in the classroom to solve real-world problems, an essential skill in today’s competitive global labour market. - Mr Greg Roberts

As our aim was to actively engage students in STEAM activities we awarded every participant with a STEAM pack which included a memorable challenge to do at home: students could win 4 free premium cinema tickets if they assemble the wooden F1 car provided in the pack and tweet it with the hashtag #BISGrandPrix.

The event was a huge success and we gained coverage from renowned local press such as Saigoneer and City Pass Guide. We invited our sponsors along to experience first-hand an F1 in Schools competition and learn about Nam Phong Racing’s successes and progress thus far.

Through the BIS Grand Prix we hope to have ignited passion in  the next generation of F1 in Schools pioneers as we believe it is an incredible opportunity for students to challenge themselves, grow personally and engage with their interests outside the classroom.
