Ask our Alumni 2018

22 June 2018

This week we welcomed back some familiar faces as 17 BIS HCMC alumni joined us in the common room on Wednesday lunchtime to answer questions from current students about life after BIS.

We were thrilled to see so many alumni coming back to pass on their thoughts and experiences to students who are just embarking on the university application process and making some big decisions about their future endeavours. Our expert panel was made up of alumni from the Class of 2012 (Dong Nguyen) through to the recently graduated Class of 2018 (Toby Le), with almost every class in between represented. These alumni brought with them a wide variety of experiences having studied across a range of disciplines such as the Arts, Business, Marketing, Media, Medicine, Law, and much more.

Our current students were treated to hearing about all aspects of life after BIS, from making decisions about gap years and university courses and destinations, through to the world of work. They asked insightful questions about the difference between the IB Diploma programme and studying in University, the difference between US and UK destinations, what to do in the summer between IBDP final exams and starting university, and how they have managed being away from home (and from BIS!) It was pleasing to hear about how well prepared they felt for university due to the breadth of courses taken as part of the IBDP, and the skills that they have developed through the IBDP core. It was also useful for our Year 10 students to hear about the relative importance of their subject choices for the IB Diploma, which they will soon be deliberating over once they enter Year 11 in August.

Following the panel sessions our Year 10 and 12 students were able to ask individuals directly about their personal experiences within their field of interest. It was lovely to see our students, past and present, connecting through the shared experience that studying at BIS gives them. Our alumni were then able to tour the school to see some of the changes that have been made in their absence and to catch up with their teachers.

At the end  of the day a group of alumni also challenged our current BIS HCMC Basketball team to a game where they were won, 78-54. It’s good to know they’ve still got it!

This was a fantastic turnout and we really appreciate the time that our alumni have given in joining us for this event. They have often said how useful these events were for them when they made their university decisions and it is great that they have been able to pass on their advice to our current students. It also shows the importance of the relationships that are built through their time in school and the affiliation that they still have with BIS. All in all it’s good to know that our alumni retain their strong ties with us at BIS and remain connected to the BIS community. For some, it is like coming home.
