Full STEAM Ahead in F3

Last week Captain James Chandler of NASA (otherwise known as Mr Chandler, the whole school STEAM coordinator) visited F3 to get involved with the design and problem-solving element of building as F3 classes started their first rocket junk modeling projects. Children made choices about materials, talked about how they would fasten and join materials, decided how they might decorate their rockets and predicted if their rockets would fly. Read on to find out how the project finished with a rocket launch from the roof.

What better way to start a design and build project than to have the specialist involvement from our whole school STEAM and DT coordinators. A whole problem was presented to the children – Captain James has lost his rocket and needs to get back to Space.

  • F3 Rocket 1
  • F3 Rocket 2

Immediately children were enthralled by the role play element of the problem, but also keen to get building. To further the interest and to show what a real rocket can do, we had a real life launch from the F3 roof playground. First the teachers (Captain James and Captain Luke) assessed the wind direction to work out where to set up the rocket and then children counted down from 20 to BLAST OFF!  The rocket was powered by water pressurized by pumping air from a foot pump into a partially filled water bottle. When the pressure inside the bottle built up enough, it forced the bung out of the bottom with an explosion of water causing a cheer from the gathering crowd of students from F3. The children were absolutely delighted when we had lift off.

We’re looking forward to some more problem solving, designing and building, and we welcome Captain James and Captain Luke back to EY&I any time.
