Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 07/09/18

Sean O'Neill (58 posts) Head Teacher, Secondary Campus View Profile

Dear Parents,

How well do you really know your child’s school environment?

This week many of our Year 7 parents joined us on campus at our Open Day and explored the facilities and joining classes to watch teaching and learning live. The opportunity to watch and then discuss what they saw with tutors, and senior leaders was a good opportunity to deepen their understanding of what we do, how we do it and why.

When their children return home now the conversations about the day at school will be with a better picture in mind of the places, events and the way we do things on the secondary campus - a more meaningful conversation for both parent and child don’t you think.

Next week it is our Year 8 Parent’s opportunity to join us, so many of you have already signed up and so I look forward to another successful Open Day event.

This week was also the time for the fourth BIS F1 in Schools Team to represent Vietnam, this time at the 2018 F1 in Schools World Finals in Singapore.  This is arguably the biggest STEAM event for schools in the world annually and so Good Luck to Team Nam Phong Racing...

Live Webcast Playlist

The World Finals will be webcast live via the F1 in Schools YouTube Channel   Below is a link to the playlist which has the links for each day.   Detailed timings are provided by clicking here.

Nam Phong Racing will be competing against Wales in their first race which is scheduled to start on September 9th at 17:30. Mr Roberts is a proud Welshman and so his loyalties will be tested at this stage of the event!

The second team race will be against Germany on September 10th at 14:00.

Look out for our report on the finals next week too.

Student Diary from the 2018 United Nations Summit

In July, three BIS HCMC students spent a week at the United Nations Headquarters in New York taking part in a Model United Nations and working with students from around the world on actions to tackle some of the issues faced in our world today. Here, Doan Nguyen (Year 13), Vy Nguyen (Year 12) and Ashley Lee (Year 11) share their Student Diary from the 2018 UN Summit.

… And the Drama Begins at BIS HCMC for 2018-2019

Hot off the press from the Drama department.

Today was the big reveal of the cast lists for the three shows that we are producing this year: Metamorphoses, Little Shop of Horrors and The Great Gatsby. You may have heard the screams of excitement around the city as students found out who they were playing.

Congratulations to all students who took part.  We are incredibly proud of everyone that auditioned! Cast lists will be shared as rehearsals get under way. Of course now the hard work begins and we can all anticipate great performances later in the year.

The Performing Arts at BIS allows for students to work in a variety of styles and gives them a chance to develop their transferable skills such as leadership, empathy and purpose. The core of what we do is based in exploration through performance but we also encourage students to research, present, direct, design and get involved technically through lessons and CCAs. The power of the Performing Arts curriculum can be seen in the number of students that sign up to be part of our extensive production programme in a variety of different roles”. Anne-Marie Astley, Drama Teacher.

Read more about the performing arts curriculum through Nord Anglia Education collaborations from Rachel Whitehunt, of  NAE's British International School of Washington.

Learning Skills Challenges

Welcome back to the 2018 BIS Learning Skills Challenges!

I really hope that you enjoyed the challenges last week and that the excitement of opening the safe will have overcome the initial challenges and frustrations of solving the puzzle, after all part of being successful is having PERSEVERANCE.

PE and Sports, Preparations Begin

With our first sporting fixtures beginning next week, the PE Department is enthusiastically preparing teams and planning for another big year in sports for BIS.

On Wednesday 5th September, Mr Phil Husband, Head of PE, sent an email entitled ‘BIS Sports 2018-2019’ to all parents with links to the sporting calendar and exciting news about our facilities updates and new Head of Aquatics, Ms Emily McClelland. I encourage you to read it and perhaps tag it to keep up to date with our sporting seasons.

I do hope that your child will take part and benefit from some form of sport on offer this year, whether that is recreational for fun or competitively with a team. Have a great sporting year ahead.
