BIS HCMC welcomes Juilliard Curriculum Specialist Jessica Meyer

Last week, we were fortunate enough to welcome Juilliard Curriculum Specialist, violist and composer Jessica Meyer to BIS HCMC.

As part of our collaboration with the world-leading performing arts institute The Juilliard School New York we regularly welcome Juilliard alumni and Curriculum Specialists into school to run professional development workshops with our teachers and interactive lessons with our students.

During Jessica’s visit she started by performing to our Early Years and Infant Campus children where she demonstrated the unusual sound of the viola and answered many questions from our engaged young learners.

She then took a session with a Year 7 string class who have been studying music through learning the instruments of the string family. Here the students used these instruments to compose pieces showing emotions.  Jenny commented, ‘I really enjoyed it because I got to make up my own music to describe my feelings’. Louis was also quoted as saying, ‘I think it was amazing because we got to play with a world famous musician and we got to get better on our instruments and explore new techniques’.

At lunchtime, the Secondary Campus were treated to a concert where Jessica demonstrated her unique style of playing using fantastic viola skills mixed with contemporary music technology, allowing her to loop her ideas to sound like a full orchestra. One student Sanny commented on how Jessica played with such control of her instrument.

Year 10 IGCSE and Year 12 IB Music students were then given a chance to explore their feelings through a composition workshop. Jenny, Year 10 said how the session was ‘engaging, creative and unusual’.

Jessica finished the day with a masterclass for the viola players from both the Junior and Secondary campuses. Here the students worked on improving their tone and also developed their improvisational skills.

Here at the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City we are committed to providing our students with unique learning opportunities such as those offered by our collaboration with Juilliard.
