Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 08/11/2019

“For time and the world do not stand still. Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future”

John F. Kennedy

Dear Parents

Friday is always an interesting day - I find myself caught between reflecting on the achievements of an inevitably successful ‘BIS week’, planning for those to come and anticipating a relaxing weekend. I cannot begin to understand the ‘physics’ of time, but the words of John F. Kennedy resonate strongly, especially at this time of year.

As we look back over the week, our Year 11 Geographers returned from an action-packed expedition to Mui Ne, the Desford Colliery Band provided us with a feast for our ears whilst our U19 Volleyball teams demonstrated true BIS perseverance in the City Champs. Next comes the juncture in time - looking ahead to reflect on the past with the UK and Commonwealth Service of Remembrance on Sunday. For many of us, this is a moment to pause, remember and offer reverence, while also aspiring for a future of hope. Past, present and future all blurred into one - eternalism - something that rests far easier on my mind than grappling with quantum physics or theories around the ‘growing block universe’. We need Mr Mincher to explain that one for us!

So, is eternalism at BIS a healthy pensiveness for the past, timeless enjoyment of the present and limitless building for the future? This week feels like it might be in any case. Mr Dyer and students in Years 6-8, joined by experts from MIT, engaged in a Nord Anglia STEAM Festival at Regent’s School in Pattaya. Here, students engaged collaboratively in a full design cycle to create a device capable of capturing images in difficult to access environments. 21st century learning that is helping students develop the skills required of an uncertain future? I certainly think so. At this very moment, 18 students in Years 10-12 are engaged in SEOMUN XXII, where they will explore and debate ‘The Future We Want’ alongside hundreds of like-minded students from around the world. Point proven? Clearly, John F. Kennedy’s words are lost on BIS; perhaps not a bad thing!

Wishing you all a peaceful weekend

Mr Lee Falconer (Assistant Head)

Desford Colliery Band Make Some Noise at BIS

Desford Band Visit 9

Last Friday saw the Desford Colliery Band perform some great concerts across the campuses culminating in a fantastic afternoon concert to parents, also featuring our BIS Community and KS3 Choirs.

We are very fortunate to have such a large ensemble of musicians travelling to visit us and we very much appreciate the effort.  Thank you Desford Colliery Band, see you next time you visit us at BIS!

NAE South East Asia STEAM Festival 2019

This year the Nord Anglia Education South East Asia STEAM Festival was held at Regents International School in Pattaya and for 6 of our students it was an amazing journey of collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.

Our students were the perfect ambassadors for the British International School Ho Chi Minh City in the way that they accepted the challenge, pushed themselves and encouraged their peers. They embodied the Aide Memoire - Global citizens, learning together.

Luke Dyer, STEAM Co-ordinator, provides some insight into Nord Anglia Education STEAM Festival 2019.

Season 1 SISAC City Championships continue

It has been a big week for the BIS Volleyball teams as the U19 team made BIS history!

Find out more from Mr Phil Husband, Head of PE about the SISAC City Championships.

Year 11 IGCSE Geography Residential to Mui Ne

The Geography Department firmly believe that learning outside of the classroom plays a fundamental role in students building a deeper understanding and a stronger connection with the world around them, whilst allowing them to recognise the challenges that may impact their lives and communities in the future.

Our recent IGCSE residential to Mui Ne proved this, find out more from Mr Stuart Elliot, Geography Teacher.

FOBISIA U15 Athletics - Phuket

A fantastic effort from our U15 FOBISIA Squad today in the pool and on the field, with numerous medals, personal bests and even some new school records.  Congratulations boys and good luck for the basketball and football over the weekend.

To follow their efforts across the weekend, check out the updates from BISHCMC_PE on our Social Wall.

SEOMUN 2019 Arrived and Ready

Our Model United Nations delegation has also arrived in Seoul for SEOMUN 2019. The conference begins today- 400+ delegates spread over multiple committees. This year’s focus is ‘The Future We Want’.

We already know the passion and power in the voices of some of our delegates and we look forward to hearing about some of the world changing and influential conversations that they are involved in over the weekend.

Weekly Wellbeing - Personal Wellbeing Plans

Mario Kart - Weekly Wellbeing | BIS HCMC

A plumber named Mario, a world of levels, secret routes, obstacles in the shapes of boulders, spikes and firebars and a friendship group of Yoshi, Daisy and Toad ...not your usual Wellbeing lesson! But through the use of a Super Mario Bros analogy for life, our Year 10 and Year 12 students were introduced to their own Personal Wellbeing Plans.

Delivering a Global Education for Tomorrow

BIS_Delivering a Global Education for Tomorrow

When we ask our parents about the skills they most want their children to develop ready for tomorrow it is the ability to think critically, have a global mindset, communicate well and to be adaptable and resilient through change. These are all part of the fabric of a Nord Anglia education.

Find out more from Nord Anglia Education CEO, Andrew Fitzmaurice about how, as an NAE school, BIS is providing a global education for our students.
