Ms Deirdre Grimshaw: Weekly Update 03/05/2019

A warm welcome back to all our families this term and an especially warm welcome to all the new families that have just joined us. We are delighted to have you here at BIS and we hope you all have enjoyed your first few days at school.

For those returning from holidays, we hope everyone had a wonderful time. The children were certainly keen to share their tales of the many adventures and activities they got up to.

With only 8 full weeks ahead before the end of the year, we have a jam-packed schedule ahead of us. I would ask you all to ensure you stay up to date with class and school events by checking in with Seesaw, reading the weekly learning letters and weekly updates.

The first event I would like to draw your attention to is the Digital Citizenship Workshop scheduled for next Thursday, May 9th. It will take place in the Junior Campus Gym, beginning at 8.30am and is open to all parents. It is extremely important that parents are vigilant about the online safety of their children and this workshop will guide you as to how to do this. A reminder letter with more details was sent to all parents yesterday.

The second event that is approaching is our PTG AGM taking place on Thursday May 16th. This event is for both the primary and secondary Parent Teacher Groups and the committee will share what events have been run this year, what monies have been raised and how this has been distributed. The PTG committee will need new volunteers next year so should you be interested in stepping up, please email bisvnptgap1@gmail.com or speak to current committee members, Lily, Nicky G, Nandini, Eng Wan, Dawa and Ruchika to express your interest.  We are keen for new volunteers to come on board and help to build an even stronger school community.

Other events this term at the Junior Campus include our Junior Production later in May, the Aquathlon in June and a host of other events.  Please do scroll down to the Dates in the Diary Section for more details.

Classes for Next Year

Each year, we look collectively as teachers as to the mix of students in each class and whether we need to mix the classes. This is done if we feel there is an imbalance of gender, nationality, ability or other. This year I am pleased to share that all teachers feel the classes can remain as they are for the following year groups; Year 3 Year 4 and Year 5.  Year 6 will be mixed as they move into secondary. New students to the school will be placed carefully in classes to ensure that a good balance is maintained.

For those that ordered hard copies of photographs from Pret a Portrait, the first batch have arrived. We are sorting them and will distribute them to classes on Monday.  Please note, more are expected so if you don’t receive your orders, they will most likely be in the next delivery.

School Identification Badges

With so much happening across the three campuses, we see an increase in parents and visitors on site and as such we need to be more vigilant about campus security both during the school day and at weekends.  We would like to remind all parents that school identification badges must be worn, even on the weekends when attending school activities.  If not, you will be asked for some form of identity and asked to wear a visitor’s badge.

If you are sending a nanny or driver, please ensure they have the school identity lanyard or some form of identity card. We thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students and school site safe and secure.

Managing our Traffic Together

Drivers Code of Conduct

For more information about how we can work together to improve traffic around our campuses, please access this post.

We have noticed a number of parents, nannies and drivers using the road instead of the bridge to cross between the Junior Campus and the Secondary Campus.  Please can we urge all of our community to use the bridge particularly at drop off and pick up times. It keeps you safe and also allows the traffic to flow more easily at these busy times.

Safeguarding at school – it’s everyone’s responsibility

It is every parent’s wish to capture memorable moments on camera of their child at school either performing in an assembly, on their birthday or simply playing with their friends on the playground before the start of the school day.  Any photos that are taken by parents on personal devices must be kept private.  They must not be shared publicly on social media or between non-family members such as other parents in the school.  By following these guidelines, we ensure our BIS safeguarding policy is adhered to and that our children are kept safe.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Child Protection

If, during your visit to school, you have any reason to be concerned about the safety of a young person, please contact the Designated Safeguarding Person.

Please note that CCTV cameras are in operation at all times across the campus.

Finally, the weather is extremely hot and sunny at the moment.  Please ensure that your child comes to school with their school hat and water bottle every day.  It is vital that children stay hydrated and cool when outside.

Also an important reminder that clubs and Vietnamese lessons resume next week. It is the same schedule as last term. Please ensure your children are collected promptly from clubs and lessons.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms Deirdre Grimshaw, Headteacher
