Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 14/06/2019

Sean O'Neill (58 posts) Head Teacher, Secondary Campus View Profile

Dear Parents,

With Mr Mincher attending a conference this week, it gives me great pleasure to be writing this update and sharing with you the events for the week. With the end of the academic year approaching you could almost forgive a school for slowing down in the last few weeks of the year. Of course, at BIS this is certainly not the case, and we were delighted to welcome so many of you onto campus for the Head Teacher’s Coffee Morning followed by a self-directed look at learning around the school. As always we’ve been busy this week with events that recognise and support different aspects of our students’ learning, from our budding triathletes taking part in our first BIS Triathlon, to our Year 10 Geographers exploring Ho Chi Minh City for their fieldwork. We also very much enjoyed celebrating the hard work and impressive creativity of our IBDP Visual Arts students with their exhibition earlier in the week.

For our Year 11 students this has been a particularly special week as they come to the end of their IGCSE examinations. It has been an absolute pleasure to witness and appreciate the efforts of our students, and the way that they have risen to the challenge of the examination period, showing perseverance and good humour. On Saturday night we’ll be celebrating these efforts at the Year 11 Prom, where students and staff will mark the end of one chapter in our students’ lives.

The weekend of celebration doesn’t stop there, with our BIS Sports Stars attending the BIS Sports Awards Evening, a ceremony which marks the culmination of the last year’s dedication and commitment to sport at BIS. We’re looking forward to finding out the winners of this year’s awards!

Ms Lauren Binnington, Assistant Head Teacher

Overview of the week’s activities

IBDP Visual Arts Exhibition 2019

IB Visual Arts Exhibition 2019 | BIS HCMC

For our IBDP Visual Arts students, the IBVA Art Exhibition symbolises the proud conclusion to two years of creative study and effort. After all of the challenges faced and conquered, the exhibition is their time to enjoy the happiness of successfully finishing their work and curating their own exhibition. This was an occasion made even more significant by hosting a viewing for family and friends here at BIS HCMC.

To showcase their final IBDP course pieces, Sayuri, Sienna, Ali and Hye-Jin presented eleven pieces of personally developed work alongside their important process portfolios and critical investigation studies. – Janet Williams, Head of Art

Transition Team Training Day

Transition Team Training Day - BIS HCMC

Esther Kim, Year 7, said that she enjoyed, “meeting new people and planning with good people about how to help the new starters at school.”

The focus for our Transition Team is to assist new students, including Year 6s, as they adjust to life at the BIS Secondary Campus by offering guidance and support throughout the year.  This week a new group of students joined the current group to undertake a Transition Team Training day.

It is lovely to see such a large team trained and capable, ready to welcome our new students.  Thank you to you all.

The BIS Triathlon 2019

The BIS Triathlon 2019

It was an early start on Saturday morning for about 50 students and 30 adults from across our BIS community as they competed in our first BIS Triathlon.  Participants competed across three sports: swimming, cycling and running, in teams or individually, and across a variety of age groups.  Well done to all who participated. It was lovely to see the enthusiasm of all involved and we look forward to future events.

Head Teacher’s Coffee Morning

Head Teacher's Coffee Morning - BIS HCMC

This week we welcomed Secondary parents into the campus for our Head Teacher’s Coffee Morning followed by a self-directed tour of the school. It was wonderful to open our classroom doors to our parents, allowing them to take a look at their children’s learning.

The session also gave some important updates for 2019-2020 that we are excited to be able to share, including a preview of our facilities updates. Parents were given a brief introduction to our new information management system and parent app by Mr Steve Porter, our SIMS Manager, and learnt about some exciting changes to our Wellbeing and IBDP Core curriculum for next year from Mr Robbie Alexander, Head of Year 11, and Mrs Amy Murphy, Deputy Head Teacher.

Find out more by reading about the Head Teacher’s Coffee Morning from Ms Lauren Binnington, Assistant Head Teacher.

Year 10 IGCSE Geography Fieldwork Expedition

IGCSE Geography Fieldwork - BIS HCMC

The Geography Department firmly believe that learning outside of the classroom plays a fundamental role in enabling our students to build a deeper understanding and a stronger connection with the world around them, along with highlighting the challenges and possibilities that may impact their lives and communities in the future.  Our recent IGCSE Geography Fieldwork Expedition to District 4 and District 7 certainly provided this experience.

Find out more about the students’ learning from Geography teacher, Mr Stuart Elliott.

BIS Grand Prix 2019

BIS Grand Prix Nam Phong Racing

Last Friday the Auditorium was filled with the roaring sounds of the second ever BIS Grand Prix.  Our F1 in Schools team for 2019, Nam Phong Racing, successfully hosted the event which brought together 60 students from international schools across South East Asia.

With a focus on design, from team logo to model racing car, the event provided an excellent opportunity for students to test both their creativity and understanding of physics.  Find out more about this STEAM event and the Nam Phong Racing team by reading about the BIS Grand Prix 2019.

BIS Night of the Arts 2019

BIS Night of the Arts 2019

Last week we held the BIS Night of the Arts which has become a highlight in our calendar for so many reasons, this year being no exception. Parents, students and staff were able to see some of the amazing work that is created in our classrooms, studios and workshops and we’re delighted to share with you some photographs from the event.

BIS Students Participate in 2019 Bangkok Supercup

The Bangkok Supercup | BIS HCMC

FOX Football marshall the development of players’ ability, discipline, fitness, and sportsmanship and run regular co-curricular activities here at the British International School Ho Chi Minh City.

For 8 BIS primary and secondary students involved in FOX Football, they recently had the exciting opportunity to head to Thailand for the Bangkok Supercup; one of Asia's top international youth football tournaments. Students Christian Gladchuk and Louis De Geer provide all the highlights from the tournament!
