Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 30/08/2019

Sean O
Sean O'Neill (58 posts) Head Teacher, Secondary Campus View Profile

The first complete week of the term has been full of shared Summer stories and new beginnings. I am delighted to bring to you a taster of both in this week’s newsletter.

From students at the UN, staff at the Juilliard School, Summer Football tournaments, to courageous auditions and first steps on the IB programme, along with PTG events, there is so much to enjoy below. A key part of the weeks learning for all students has been through the launch of our Wellbeing Curriculum and so this is also featured throughout this weeks newsletter.

The Secondary Campus has once again come alive to the sounds of the Music Department who have also had a fantastic week listening to over 100 of our musical students auditioning to join the Orchestra or Chamber Choir.  The instrumental and musical skills on show from all students has been superb and the confidence and courage of all students to put themselves forward has been inspiring. What a wonderful background they have provided for the week’s learning!

Congratulations to all students and thanks for auditioning.

Overview of the week’s activities

‘Learning from a teacher who has stopped learning is like drinking from a stagnant pond.’

BIS Professional Development at the Juilliard School, New York

I am inspired and enriched by the work that I have done , and I cannot wait to share the approaches and the ethos of Juilliard and their curriculum with the staff, students and parents at BIS HCMC.

Cat Molloy, Head of Drama

During the Summer break, Cat Molloy, our Head of Drama embarked on an exciting trip to The Juilliard School, New York to receive a week of performing arts training as part of our ongoing collaboration with this world renowned performing arts school. Mrs Molloy tells us more...

Year 12 Parents information evening

BIS_Year 12 Parents information evening

As our new IB students embark on their next chapter it was a great pleasure to welcome parents to an evening of information sharing as we look forward to another year ahead working in great partnership.

Supporting your sons and daughters along the IB Diploma Programme is best done if our programme and the BIS approach is well understood by parents.

During the evening presentations from Ms Jane Hall our Head of Sixth Form were complemented by a reminder about the IB Diploma and what it entails from Mr Matt Lambert, IBDP Co-ordinator.

A look forward to the University application process from Dr Finnigan (Senior University Guidance Counsellor), was followed by an outline from Mr Sean O’Neill of the Wellbeing curriculum and processes that enable our students to flourish throughout their IB years.

The opportunity to discuss the part we each play, at home and at school, to understand when the right time is to be in close support and when it is best to let go and yes even watch them stumble a little along the way was the purpose of the evening’s presentations.

It is through our partnership we create the best conditions for our children to grow and flourish; to be happy and confident in their studies and ultimately successful in school and life beyond. We are very much looking forward to working with you again as the year unfolds.

Year 12 IB Students - Learning in The Curve

BIS_Year 12 IB Students - Learning in The Curve

As part of their IB Core Curriculum programme designed to embed the skills, attributes and approaches to learning needed to succeed in the IB Diploma, this Friday saw all of our Y12 students engaged in a session in the Curve led by our Teacher Librarian and Extended Essay Coordinator, Ms Anita Curley.

The session was designed to introduce the students to the ways in which the Curve and its resources support students in harnessing and directing their passion and enthusiasm for both learning and personal growth.

On a carousel of activities, students participated in short taster sessions exploring a range of digital and physical resources accessible to all students at BIS Secondary, but particularly appropriate for study at IB Level.  All students also had a chance to browse the shelves in the Curve, and choose a book to ‘read for pleasure’ - a pastime that is crucial to all our personal well being, but is especially important for students at this stage of their education. A huge thanks to Ms Curley for devising such a great session and for the year 12 students for such enthusiastic engagement. I urge all parents of our Y12 students to ask your sons and daughters what book they chose from our collection.

Developing the Wellbeing Curriculum at BIS Secondary

What are three things I am thankful for?

This was one of the starter questions posed during the Wellbeing introductory assemblies this week at the Secondary Campus. The answers provided were unanimous across all year groups and genuinely heartening; parents, friends and being a student at BIS.

Find out more from Mr Alexander, Head of Middle Secondary (Pastoral & Wellbeing) about how we are developing the Wellbeing curriculum for our Secondary students.
