Mr Carl Mincher: Weekly Update 06/09/2019

Dear Parents

The early part of the year is a time of new beginnings and reconnections and this week several of our events were aimed at further building the collaboration between parents, between school and home and between our students. So, in this week’s newsletter I am pleased to share an update on parent workshop events, a Digital Citizenship briefing, the launch of our new parent app, as well as more on our new Wellbeing Curriculum, University Guidance for the year ahead and PTG parent socials.

iParent Portal and App

iSAMS is the name of our new information system and one of the key briefings we shared this week was on how you as parents can connect with iSAMS via our new app.

An audience all focussed on their devices is possibly a presenters worst nightmare but on this occasion it was exactly what we hoped for as Mr Steve Porter guided parents through their first steps on our new parent app.

If you haven’t yet logged on please refer to the email from Mr Porter with the steps you need to take. Please take time to do this as once logged on you will have access to important information regarding your child(ren) and access to these newsletters, a key events calendar and as we go forward through the year much much more including progress reporting and attendance data.

Alongside this briefing we continued with a further technology related update that captured the interest of all of us as parents and teachers alike...

Enhancing and Supporting Digital Citizenship

The world is changing at a fast pace and the impact of technology on our lives is in constant flux. As parents and educators, we need to be looking at the impact of technology in the home and classroom and make sure that it is enhancing and not negatively affecting our students' lives.

This week, parents from all campuses were invited to an information session from Mr Luke Dyer, STEAM Coordinator & Primary ICT Lead Teacher, who shared some advice to guide and support us parents of ‘Digital Natives’.

College and University Guidance 2019

BIS_College and University Guidance 2019

As teachers, parents and students we have high ambition for the future university courses our graduates will embark upon and so there is always a keen interest in the support provided by our University Guidance team.

Dr Simon Finnigan, Senior College and University Guidance Counsellor, gives us an update on the first few weeks of term focussing on the activities that our Year 12 and 13 students have been involved in to help prepare them for the next stage of their lives.

International Day 2019 - Friday 18th October

The Secondary Campus International Day is on Friday 18th October 2019.  With only 6 weeks to go and lots to prepare, we know that many of you are already thinking about what your Country will share this year.

There will be an International Day planning meeting on Wednesday 18th September at 8.30am to help prepare for the day.

Everyone is invited and we hope to see as many parents as possible at this first meeting, bring your friends, bring your ideas and bring your questions.

We will share a brief outline of the plans for this year’s exciting event and we want to hear from you about your ideas and plans so that we can prepare yet another incredible BIS International Day.

“What emotions did I feel this week and why did I feel them?”

This was one of the opening discussion activities in this weeks Wellbeing lessons and it was wonderful to hear our students expressing positive emotions they had experienced during the last week such as happiness, amazement and joy. Just as enlightening and valuable however was the discussion around the importance of experiencing and accepting negative emotions and how to respond to them in a way which enables our students to ‘bounce back’ quickly. This awareness is at the heart of our new Wellbeing curriculum and it was fantastic to hear discussions around the development of greater resilience so early in the year.

Highlights from Wellbeing this week included our Year 7 students exploring the concept of social values and the importance of positive relationships; showing kindness and support to others, not only in school but at home and in the community. Our Year 8 students started to look at personal character strengths and over the next few weeks will be working to identify their own particular strengths and how to develop them.

Our Year 10 students continued to look at building their levels of resilience and ability to cope, particularly important qualities as they embark on their two year IGCSE programme.

I hope you are having an opportunity to discuss the Wellbeing curriculum with your son or daughter and gain a greater understanding of the work they are doing during lessons and in Form Time. I look forward to speaking with many of you in the upcoming Parents Open Days and giving you more insight into this new curriculum.

Settling In Workshop For Parents

Arriving in a new school can be daunting for students and their families. When you add in arriving to a new city or country it could become a little overwhelming.  Here at BIS HCMC we recognise this and endeavour to provide as much support as possible to our school community.

This week parents joined in on a Settling in Workshop at the EY&I Campus and then later in the week, many parents also gathered for a Bus Tour adventure around District 2 with our PTG.
