Aidan awarded Hummingbird Medal for community service efforts

The aim of our community service programme here at the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City is to focus on our students volunteering their time to community projects rather than simply fundraising.

We want to open doors and create opportunities for students from a young age to overcome language, social, and ability barriers, while taking responsibility towards people and the environment, both on a local and global scale. This all goes towards developing positive characteristics of global citizens.

Celebrating student success is something we pride ourselves on here at BIS Ho Chi Minh City. One way we celebrate success in community service across the primary school is via the Hummingbird Award.

The Hummingbird Award is presented each term to students who show excellence in community service. This could be through a variety of avenues; their work in the year group projects, in one of the community service-based co-curricular activities that connect children with one of our community partners, or in our whole school community events. Each term, the teachers and club leaders are asked to nominate students who’ve excelled in these areas to be recognised for their effort, interest or progress.

Hummingbird Award Winner - Term 1

Our congratulations go to Aidan in Year 2 who has been awarded the Hummingbird Medal for Term 1.

Hummingbird Award - Aidan

One of our community after-school clubs is the construction club where children from BIS play with the children of Binh Tho. As well as this, our Year 2 community partner is Anh Minh School for the Hearing Impaired. Over the course of the academic year, the children have weekly visits with the Anh Minh children where they share their classroom and learning. On alternate weeks, BIS and Anh Minh visit each other’s campuses and spend time doing activities typical for their school.

“Aidan always has such a positive and caring attitude towards our community partner children despite the language barriers. He is always making sure other children are happy and okay. He was very new to the school when we worked with Anh Minh but he was kind and engaged with the other children on the first meeting. Before the second visit he asked lots of questions. He played well with the other children and showed how they could share the Lego they were playing with.” - Mr. Luke Neville, EAL Assistant Leader and Construction Club Teacher and Zoe Turner, Year 2 Teacher

We would also like to applaud all the students from BIS Primary who were recognised by their teachers and club leaders for excellence in Community Service in Term 1: Ryan, Lou Anh, Hani, Cappy, Timothee, Keira, Nana, Vi Khang, Thien Y, Jayden, Eddie, Harry Ho, Suboi, Kin, Alexander and Aiden.
