Mr Sean O'Neill: Weekly Update 06/11/2020

Sean O’Neill
Sean O’Neill (15 posts) Head Teacher, Secondary Campus View Profile

Dear parents,

I am delighted to open this week with  an update on our Central Vietnam Flood Relief Appeal. The response  from the entire BIS HCMC Community has just been incredible - with students, teachers and parents  coming together in support of our neighbours in Central Vietnam. Thank you to everyone for  generously supporting this campaign.  I am delighted to announce we were able to raise an astonishing total of VND 296,620,000 through activities such as the Non-Uniform Day, the Community Committee Bake Sale and other donations made by students, staff and parents.  Can I add my thanks to our Community team led by Ms Tracey Brownrigg for their passionate leadership of the appeal,  enabling us, as a community, to play our small part in lending a hand to those in need.

Mrs Brownrigg explains here how our partners,  Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation will use these funds to help devastated families in Central Vietnam.

Upcoming Parent Events

It is my great pleasure to share further details of upcoming Parent events this term that encompass each aspect of a BIS HCMC education - academic success, wellbeing and character development.

We have sought to add a blend of on campus and online events to reflect both the ongoing regulations and also  the fact that for many parents being able to attend on campus events can be a challenge due to work commitments.   Please see below details of each event and how you can be involved. We look forward to seeing you there.

PTG Christmas BISzaar 2020 - Saturday 5th December

The Secondary PTG are happy to advise that we will be once again hosting  a Christmas BISzaar to celebrate the festive season.

This year the BISzaar will look a little different; as most of us will not be able to travel this year for Christmas, the PTG would like to bring the Christmas Spirit to you.

It will be an evening event with Christmas Lights, Hot Chocolate, Santa, Live Performances and other Christmas traditions.

The event will also include our traditional carols and readings performance. It promises to be a special Community Christmas.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Event Details

Date: Saturday 5th December

Time: 4pm to 8pm

Location: Secondary Campus

Entry: Limited to ticket holders only. Tickets will be on sale across all BIS Campuses soon.

Overview of the week’s activities

Uniform Upcycling Club

At BIS we often refer to our comprehensive co-curricular activities (CCAs) programme and the fantastic opportunities each of the clubs provides for students to develop a range of skills which challenge them emotionally, socially and academically.

Find out more from Mrs Tracey Brownrigg, our Whole School Co-Curricular Coordinator and Community Service Project Manager, about the latest project from the Uniform Upcycling Club.

The Big Draw 2020

Students’ and staff alike participated in the Big Draw of 2020 over the last few weeks, where we witnessed so much experimentation, collaboration and positivity.

Janet Williams, our Head of Art, shares more about all of the events that took place for this year’s The Big Draw

Acoustic Lounge in the Curve

One of my favourite moments of every month on the Secondary Campus is our monthly Acoustic Lounge sessions. These “open mic” events are an opportunity for our students to showcase their talents to an audience of teachers and fellow students. The atmosphere is always amazing and the standard of music fantastic. Well done to all who performed or attended another wonderful event

Where have you moved to BIS from?

Cambridge, UK

Why did you move to BIS?

To start a career in International Education!

What has been the best experience for you since arriving in Vietnam?

The best experience I have had since moving to Vietnam has been International Day. It was such a wonderful experience to see all the staff and students dressed in their national clothing, working together and taking part in so many exciting activities. It really helped me to fully appreciate what a diverse and inclusive school we are. I was also in awe of the level of dedication shown by the parents of students, creating enormous quantities of incredible food – I’m looking forward to next year already!

Tell us one fun fact about yourself (hobbies, interests, talents, etc.)

I have taken off in a helicopter twice, but have never landed in one.

Where have you moved to BIS from?

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Why did you move to BIS?

Fantastic job opportunity for me, great education for my two children. The reputation of the school was one of the biggest factors for us in making the decision to move here.

What has been the best experience for you since arriving in Vietnam?

The friendly local people, amazing friendly work colleagues and the relatively free covid-19 restrictions compared to back in Australia.

Tell us one fun fact about yourself (hobbies, interests, talents, etc.)

Love rock climbing, hiking, caving, canyoning... in fact adventure sport that is in the great outdoors.
