Ms Deirdre Grimshaw: Weekly Update 15/05/2020

Deirdre Grimshaw
Deirdre Grimshaw (63 posts) Head Teacher, Junior Campus View Profile

It is a pleasure to be writing this weekly update once more.  What a delight it has been this week to have students on the campus enjoying being with their teachers and friends.

We have been very impressed with how the children have adapted to the ‘new normal’ including managing their mask wearing and social distancing. They have been excellent in terms of hand washing and hand sanitizing and we are pleased to see very few students without their hats or water bottles. We thank you, the parents, for your continued support and partnership at this time.

Extended Day and Swimming

Next week, we will begin our extended school day. From Monday to Thursday each week, the day will be extended until 3.30pm. The lessons will be a mix of class and specialist lessons designed to consolidate the learning that took place during the virtual learning period.

All students at the Junior Campus can be picked up at 3.30pm from the small field for Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 and the basketball court for Year 6.  Bus children will take the bus as usual but it will depart school at 4pm rather than 3pm.

On Fridays, students can be collected at 2.30pm as usual unless your child is taking Vietnamese classes. These classes will finish at 3.40pm on Fridays.

The following week, the week beginning May 25th, swimming lessons will commence on the Junior campus as part of the PE curriculum.  We will maintain very strict health and safety protocols to ensure the health of all.

Class Mixing

This year, we will not be class mixing on the Junior Campus for Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5.  The classes are very stable and as with every year, where we have students leaving the school, we will replace them with new students.  This will be done carefully, as always, to ensure a careful balance of gender, nationality and ability. Our Year 6 students will be mixing as they move into secondary.

Uniform Measuring

During the week beginning May 25th, we will measure all returning students for their new uniforms. These will be collected by students in August.

Staffing Update

Over the last few months, our staff have worked tirelessly to ensure the students in their care received the best education possible. I am delighted that so many of our staff will continue to work at BIS next year but just like other years, it is time for some staff to begin new adventures, return to their home country or move to another overseas destination.  It is an exciting time for all and we wish all our departing teachers the very best.  In the coming weeks, I will let you know who is leaving BIS and also update you on the new staff that will be joining us.

School Photographs and Yearbook

Unfortunately, this year, we will be unable to offer official school photographs.  The company we use, ‘Pret a Portrait’, is based in the UK and our original and revised dates all fell within the time the school was closed. At this time, it is impossible for us to have the company return to Vietnam to take photos. As such, we have made the difficult decision not to have official school photos this year.

However, we are pleased to say that the school ‘19 – 20 Yearbook’ will go ahead with photos that teachers have either taken or those that have been sent in by you.  This year, the yearbook will reflect both our traditional learning and the virtual school experience our students have had.
