There were huge smiles on the faces of the children and teachers when we welcomed back the Year 1 children last week. It has been incredible to see how well the children adapted to our new routines, keeping our hands extra clean, wearing masks in shared spaces and sitting in our own special places for lunch.
There have already been many opportunities to consolidate the learning that the children completed at home, as well as beginning our new and exciting topic ‘Seeing the Light’. In Science, each class has explored objects that can be seen in the dark, and identified which were light sources and which were just reflecting the light. In IPC, the children thoroughly enjoyed identifying light and shade in artwork and used paints to explore light and dark, adding white or black to other colours to create different shades.
It has also been great to hear children’s imaginative ideas to innovate our ‘Talk for Writing’ story, Handa’s Surprise. They had already started learning it at home, and have now made some wonderful, sometimes hilarious, changes. In Maths we have been counting in groups. The aliens had 2 legs, 5 legs or 10 legs so we created number sentences to show how many legs there were all together.
It is truly great to be back together again, and we are all looking forward to seeing more fantastic learning in the coming weeks.
