Mr Ian Battersby: Weekly Update 21/08/2020

Ian Battersby
Ian Battersby (79 posts) Head Teacher, Early Years and Infant Campus View Profile

It was wonderful to welcome all the children back to the campuses on Wednesday and see so many of you at the various gates and drop off points. We hope that you have had a relaxing break; we have been enjoying hearing from the children about all they have been doing. Also, we would like to give an especially warm welcome to all of our new families, we are delighted to welcome you to our BIS community.

We are delighted to welcome all our new staff across both primary campuses. Everyone has arrived safely in Vietnam, have quarantined for two   weeks and have hit the ground running in their new roles at school. We have been extremely impressed with their enthusiasm and efforts at this time.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic we have had to make some changes to the way we begin the school year and postpone some events; we would like to remind you of some key pieces of information:

Timing of the School Day

A reminder of our school day timing for each campus. Please ensure your children are dropped off and picked up on time.  We thank you for your cooperation.

Start Time

Finish Time

Early Years and Infant Campus

Junior Campus

** For children in F1 and F2, these times will vary according to the settling in period.  Please see the reminder email that was sent this week.  If you are not sure, please contact your child’s class teacher.

School Uniform

By now you will have received your child’s school uniform. Additional items can be purchased from the Uniform Shop located at the Secondary Campus near Gate C. (Please email in advance as you will need an appointment ).

Please be reminded that the correct footwear is a compulsory part of the uniform.

Shoes:             Formal black leather shoes, not sports shoes (from F3 and above)

Socks:             White, black or grey ankle high socks.

COVID Precautions

Just a reminder that all children should wear a mask to and from school, and when not in the classroom (moving between classrooms, playtime, etc.).  Please make sure the mask is named and that your child has a spare in their bag.

Children should be bringing a water bottle to school every day as part of their usual routine, but it is all the more important during the current coronavirus pandemic.  Please make sure that your child brings their water bottle, with their name clearly on it, every day.

We have an exciting and busy year ahead and whether you are here in person or are accessing Virtual Learning until you are able to return to school, we look forward to working in partnership with you, the parents, in providing the best education we can to all our students.  Be rest assured that we will provide a safe and happy environment for the children, regardless of the current global crisis.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the school staff should you need anything.  Please see the table below for key people to contact at school.

Parents’ Information Evening

We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the ‘Parents’ Information Evening’ for the Early Years and Infant Campus which will begin in the Sports Hall on Thursday 10th September at 5pm and end in the classrooms at approximately 7pm. There will be an introduction to our leadership team, followed by a short presentation about what we are wanting to achieve as a school.  Then there will be year group specific presentations and a chance, if you have not done so already, to meet your child’s class teacher.  Please make attending this event a priority! Important information will be shared by your child’s class teacher, and you will have a much greater understanding of how you can support your child’s education over the course of the year.

Parent Teacher Student Conferences (PTSCs)

The first few weeks at school are very much about settling into new classes and routines.  General information will be shared at the Parents’ Information Evening, but there will be an opportunity to have a one-to-one meeting with your child’s class teacher in a few weeks’ time. Please make a note in your diary that the pastoral PTSCs will be taking place on Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th September.  Details of how to book an appointment will be sent to you next week.

Co-Curricular Activity (Clubs) Sign Up

I am delighted to be able to announce that this term we are able to resume our co-curricular programme. Today you should have received the Early Years and Infant Term 1 Club booklet; it was attached to the weekly update email.  In this booklet, you will find all the details about how to sign up for Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs), including when you can get support for members of the school staff, which activities are available for which year groups, and key dates relating to our CCA programme.  Encourage your child to take the opportunity to do something new.

Please take time to look at the booklet with your child and ensure that you sign up next week. We don’t want any children disappointed because the sign-up deadline was missed.

The Parent Teacher Group plays such an important role in the life of the school.  Last year, it was great to see so many parents volunteering their time to support events and activities had such a positive impact on the whole BIS community. It was sad that in the latter part of the year, we had to cancel so many events, however, we are hopeful that many of these events will take place this year.  We know that the PTG is such a source of strength in our community that will help us through the current crisis regardless.

Each week, the PTG has a post highlighting what is happening over the coming weeks and months, and how you can get involved. Click on the link below to find out more:

Primary PTG Update: 21/08/2020

And Finally…

I am always amazed at how resilient our young learners are at the Early Years and Infant Campus.  As parents and teachers we sometimes worry about how they will cope with the circumstances that we find ourselves in, however, the children have been amazing this week and made such a super start to the school year.

Mr Anthony has said that we need to expect the unexpected, but we are confident that we can look forward to a great year of learning and watching the children flourish, whatever happens.

Enjoy a relaxing and restful weekend,

Ian Battersby

Head of the Early Years and Infant Campus
