At the Shampa Kipara Camp in Arusha we were greeted by NAE staff leaders, Johnny and Lotte, and were introduced to our lovely accommodation for the next week.

The students and staff were split into two groups and each group had three activities planned for the week: Construction work for 2 days; Community Service for 2 days and a Safari trip for 2 days.

The Construction and Community Service work was very vigorous and required a lot of manual labour; the students were shoveling sand and stones and mixing cement by hand. They also tried their hands at bricklaying and plastering. The aim of all this was to build a new school for disabled students.

For Community Service, the students were taken to families who had very poor living conditions and the students then helped to install solar powered lights and a smoke-free stove in their homes. They also purchased a goat using the funds they had raised prior to the trip and built a goat shed to house the goat. Finally they built new desks for primary students to use in class.

All the money raised by our students was used to purchase tools, equipment (e.g. sand, cement and wood) buy six goats for six families and six solar lights.

On the Safari trip our students were able to get close to African wildlife . They thoroughly enjoyed seeing lions, giraffes, warthogs, elephants and many different species of birds.  Waking up at 5am to watch the sunrise on a safari truck was definitely a highlight.

All students returned back on Monday 19th feeling tired but inspired and proud about the difference they had made to improving the quality of life for the families and kids they had met.

This week in Shampa Kiapara Camp has helped put things into perspective for all of us and allowed us to appreciate what we have. It has been a life changing experience, not just for the people of Arusha, but also for us.
