In Hungarian History lessons this term Year 8 students have been learning about the dualist era and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As part of this topic, the Year 8 students visited the Royal Palace of Gödöllő, King Franz Joseph’s and Queen Elisabeth’s favourite residence in Hungary.

The palace is one of the most important, largest monuments of Hungarian palace architecture and was given to the royal couple as a coronation gift from the country in 1867. Through different activities our students learnt a lot about the members of the royal family, their staff and about everyday life in the royal court.

Some facts that the students learnt:

“Queen Elisabeth had knee-length hair which took 3 hours to brush every day. While being brushed, the queen spent her time learning languages.” (Szonja Török)

“The royal family had 12-course meals, but they ate very little from every course.” (Lilien Pfiszter)

“There were nine kitchens in the palace where they prepared the different courses.” (Anna Majoros)

“They had hidden doors which lead behind the tile stoves so it was not visible how the maids heated them up.” (Rachel Olomofe)
