The International Award Bronze and Silver teams successfully completed their practice expeditions between Monday and Wednesday this week, camping and trekking in the Börzsöny. Below is an account of the experience from some of our students on the award.
How was the Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) Silver experience, you ask? Well all of us survived and no one got injured! Besides these positives, it was pretty cold - we needed to sleep with three blankets! - and we hiked 43km over three days carrying everything we needed through mud that almost reached up to our ankles.
This description could seem quite painful, but there have been lots of positives. For example, we saw a huge variety of flora and fauna including a salamander, frogs, deer, cows, sheep, boars and countless different insects not to mention blooming flowers and mushrooms.
When the teams got back to camp after our hard day we lit a campfire and had Oreos with toasted marshmallows. Overall, when we signed up for this, we knew what was coming. None of us would change it for a bit and would even sign up for it again!.
