As part of the CCAs, we started a literary walk with the Hungarian IB students once a month on a Saturday afternoon. Our first walk was about cafes with literary history because we are learning about the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1910, there were already 400 cafes in Budapest, and Budapest was nicknamed the “coffee city”. However, even then, the most famous one was the New York café (founded in 1894), being a hub for the most famous Hungarian writers and poets such as Ady Endre, Kosztolanyi Dezso, and Karinthy Frigyes. Other popular spots which we visited were Central and Hadik. The walk took 1.5 hours, and we even managed to get on board a millennium tram, which the poets used to travel between cafes.
