This week, Year 9 were continuing their studies of metals and their compounds and were looking at the thermal decomposition of metal carbonates.
They heated the solids and recorded any observations – including seeing if there was a colour change and testing any gas evolved. By testing the gas, with limewater, they were able to recognise that if the carbonate decomposed it gave off carbon dioxide because the limewater went cloudy.
The students all acted very safely and made some excellent observations.
