Years 3-6 Sports Day and success in volleyball has meant an influx of activity for our BISS Lions over the last couple of weeks. Ms Manley serves up some highlights of what's been happening.

BISS is excited to be welcoming two visitors from The Juilliard School, New York, in the coming weeks. We look forward to greeting Dance Curriculum Specialist, Ashley Eichbauer Newman, and Drama Curriculum Specialist, Aurea Tomeski.

At BISS, we have been working hard to upgrade and improve our reading provision and library resources for our Primary students. We aim to support our students to find a ‘new world of adventure’ within stories that can be used across the curriculum.

On Saturday 28 October, BISS welcomed over 70 boys and girls to compete in the annual SISAC (Shanghai International School Athletic Conference) Tennis Championship, and we were blessed with weather perfect for a day of tennis!

The team finished the season with a record of 4-3 overall. The players clinched 4th place in the region and earned their place in the SISAC Volleyball Cup Championship, hosted by SCIS Hongqiao on Saturday 28 October. The tournament brought the BISS Lions up against Concordia, DCS Pudong and Wellington. We didn’t claim victory during the event, but the Lions gave their opponents some tough competition.

In a thrilling twist to traditional learning, our IGCSE Business Studies students engaged in an exciting and educational Halloween-themed activity where they dived into the world of entrepreneurship, while embracing the spirit of the season.

This week, we take a moment to celebrate the achievements of one of our students. Congratulations to Penelope, our talented Year 11 student, who has shown us that balancing academics and extracurricular activities is not just possible but a way of life.

The Boys D2 Volleyball Team finished 4-3 as the season ended in the SISAC West Division II.

Leading international schools provider Nord Anglia Education today announced the launch of its groundbreaking new education magazine called INSIGHTS. The new publication offers a comprehensive look into hot-topic aspects of global education, tackling topics from emotional health in young people to the role of technology, artificial intelligence in learning, and what the future of education and wellbeing could look like.

On the sunny morning of Thursday 26 October, all of our Year 8 students embarked on a trip to the Shanghai History Museum. Located in the heart of Shanghai, the museum provided an enriching opportunity for our students to delve into the depths of the city's history. The museum's exhibits, which showcased the intriguing eras of ancient and more modern Shanghai helped in building their awareness of Shanghai’s long past and how it has changed over time.

Internationalism is one of our core pillars at BISS Puxi. To celebrate this, our school community came together to showcase the rich tapestry of cultures represented among our students and staff. From captivating performances to fantastic lessons, the International Week truly created an inclusive and celebratory atmosphere that fostered mutual understanding and respect.

Thank you to all parents who attended the PSHE Information Evening on Monday 23 October. This was an opportunity to share ‘What is PSHE?’, ‘Why is it important to our young learners?’, the details of the programme of study and how teachers deliver the content.

During their Geography Rivers and Tourism field trip, Years 10 and 11 students engaged in a comprehensive exploration of both the natural and human aspects of the landscape. The primary focus of their journey was to investigate the geomorphology of a river, examining how its characteristics change as it traverses from the upper course to the lower course. This involved utilising various methods, such as assessing river velocity, gradient, bedload size and shape, wetted perimeter, width, and depth. To aid in their investigations, students employed a range of equipment, including ranging rods, metre sticks, clinometers, measuring tape, and callipers.

On Friday 20 October, the Year 9 Mandarin classes visited the Shanghai Film Studio together, which is situated in Shanghai's Songjiang District. During the visit, the students explored fully reconstructed scenic areas such as "Southern Streets" and realistic settings such as "1930s Nanjing Road" and "Shanghai Lane Residences", which provide ideal locations for film and television production. Over 30 films and several hundred episodes of television series have been filmed at this site.

On this wonderful sunny Tuesday morning, our talented artists took a leisurely stroll from school to Panlong Tiandi. Curated by the concept of “Culture, Nature, Future”, Panlong Tiandi creates a fresh blend of both East and West and ancient and modern. It revitalises Panlong, a one-thousand-year-old historic water village, partnering with lifestyle brands, such as Yuz Museum, COCO-MAT Hotel and Blue Bottle Coffee.

On Friday 13 October, Ryan King and Alfred Creissen delivered a workshop on the importance of striking the perfect balance between play-based learning and academic rigour, especially during a child's crucial Reception years.

Last week, our Year 3 students embarked on an exhilarating and educational trip to Dinosaur World in the beautiful Gucun Park. This excursion was designed to provide children with an immersive experience into the world of prehistoric creatures. Think of a place where imagination meets history and young minds can transport themselves back in time to an era ruled by mighty dinosaurs; Dinosaur World was just that! Life-sized replicas, interactive displays, and engaging activities awaited our excited explorers.

This year, to support our collaboration with UNICEF, we celebrated World Food Day on Monday 16 October in the Secondary School. On this day, BISS Puxi transformed into a vibrant culinary hub, bringing together students, parents and teachers for an unforgettable World Food Day celebration. This joyous event took place at the Well of Knowledge and featured an array of delectable dishes showcasing our diverse community.
