Students and parents at the British School of Guangzhou (BSG) were recently treated to a rare opportunity to learn from some of the most talented artist teachers in the world. Nick Mahmat, Salla Saarikangas-Kramer, and Ashley Renee Watkins from the Juilliard School in New York, a world leader in performing arts education, travelled to BSG to share their expertise with students and parents alike.
During their visit, the Juilliard artists worked with some primary classes, exploring a range of experiences in drama, dance, and music. The students learned about syncopation in music, unison and non-unison movements in dance, and various energies in drama. They also watched and reflected on a variety of core works curated by Juilliard, showcasing the elements they had been working on.
The visit was a valuable opportunity for BSG parents to get a glimpse of the Juilliard pedagogy, which complements the school's performing arts provision. Parents were invited to participate in a workshop, where they experienced a demo lesson, similar to the ones their children would be experiencing through this method.
The visit by the Juilliard artists was a brief but exciting rekindling of relations between BSG and Juilliard. BSG is fortunate to have Juilliard as a partner and looks forward to continuing to provide students with world-class performing arts education.
