OUR SOCIAL PURPOSE

The British School of Guangzhou has a vibrant culture around service and action to make improvements to our local and global communities. Our students discover ways to contribute to the lives around them, helping them define how they will make a difference around them.

SERVICE AND CHARITY WORK AT SCHOOL

Through activities with the Student Council, Community Partnership service group, and Reading Buddy Programme that hosts fundraising events, the British School of Guangzhou is always a lively place for service to others as part of our commitment to developing responsibility and leadership. Our Student Council not only helps shape and reinforce school values within our student community, but they also work with school leadership to bring about positive change and lead service actions.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

Our Student Council leaders also collaborate with Community Partnership, a group of BSG students of all ages, parents, and teachers that works on dozens of social engagement projects and events to support charities in China. Our students have volunteered to help the homeless of Guangzhou every Saturday morning throughout the year and during school holidays as one of Community Partnership’s ongoing activities. Through their service, they develop an acute understanding of the needs of the community and increase their social awareness.

Community Partnership has fundraised 167,000 RMB in the most recent school year and hosted the Christmas Cupcake and Dress-up Day, No Desk Day in Year 6 (that allows students to experience a day without basic resources), and World Children’s Day’s ‘Walk for Wellness’, among other activities.

GLOBAL AWARENESS

Starting from our campus, our students consider the environment around them and connect with the world. Whether it’s growing our own gardens on campus in the Early Years or finding ways to no longer use disposable cups and chopsticks in Primary and Secondary, our students develop a sense of responsibility towards their environment.

They use this foundation to approach sustainability concerns on a global level, which our students learn about through Global Campus challenges, activities supporting local causes through our collaboration with UNICEF, and participation in delegations of Model United Nations. Through these different activities, our students will address and analyse the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
