HOUSE SYSTEM AT THE BRITISH SCHOOL OF GUANGZHOU

The house system is a distinctly British feature of the school that encourages collegiality and healthy competition amongst students.

What Is A School House System?

The house system in our school serves to develop a sense of identity or belonging and to celebrate achievements. Each house symbol at BSG represents an era of British history.

It is important for students to have the opportunity to play an active role and contribute to a community within their school, which allows them to develop skills and talents and acknowledges their successes in a wide range of ways.

We encourage students to play an active role in the success of their house. Individual and team efforts are rewarded and students are expected to contribute to Inter-house competitions throughout the year.

How Does The School House System Work?

When a student enrols at BSG, they will be assigned to a certain house, in which they will remain throughout their entire enrolment. Over the course of each academic year, students will participate in a wide range of individual and team events as well as inter-house competitions. Every activity and competition presents an opportunity for students to earn points for their respective house. At the end of each year, the house that has accrued the most points will be declared the winner.

Benefits Of The School House System

The house system in our school comes with a range of benefits for the students, from getting them involved in the school community to fostering healthy competition within the students.

Additional benefits of the house system in our school include:

·       Fosters Community Involvement – Students are encouraged to engage with their fellow housemates to play an active role in the community of our school.

·       Engages Students In Campus Life – With a number of events and competitions throughout the year, students are excited to engage in campus life with the prospect of winning points for their house.

·       Strengthens Relationships Across Ages – As houses are not restricted to certain age groups, students will compete alongside peers of varying ages, allowing them to branch out from their usual class group.

·       Instils Healthy Competition – Students compete in a number of events and competitions throughout the year in an effort to earn points for their house, fostering friendly competition amongst the student body.

·       Encourages Student Leadership – The house system enables students to step into leadership roles in their house, encourage their housemates, and lead their peers in spirited competition.

·       Enhances School Spirit – The house system instils in students a sense of pride in their respective house as well as the school in general.

School House System Activities

We host a number of events, from sports tournaments to academic competitions, throughout the year to exercise the enjoyment of friendly competition. These include:;

·       Sports Days – Students display their athletic prowess by competing in a number of different sporting events.

·       Swimming Galas – Students take to the pool to compete in various swimming meets and races.

·       Spelling Bees – Not all house competitions are athletic based. Spelling bees represent some of our academic-based annual competitions.

·       Art and Design Challenges – Students put their creative skills on display in our fun-filled art and design challenges.

In addition to the various sporting, academic, and creative events throughout the year, students participate in specifically focused day events that curve their learning in new areas.

For example, students in Years 7 to 9 took the roles of teachers, planning and delivering lessons to Year 4 children.

Overall, our school house system encourages students to aim high, compete among and encourage their fellow classmates, and work hard to earn points for their house.
