Who is this programme for?
JALPs is an intensive English language focused programme designed for students aged 9 to 12, who have the ambition to learn English quickly. The aim of the programme is to provide students with enough English to access our mainstream school curriculum as soon as possible.
What will the programme look like?
Students will have a full timetable of academic lessons from 08:00 to 15:00 five days per week. In addition, they will participate fully in the school’s After School Activity (ASAs) programme, which includes the performing and creative arts, sports and outdoor challenges plus community activities and many other enrichment opportunities. They will also have access to other paid clubs, curriculum trips and residentials. For these enrichment activities, and for break or lunch times, JALPs students will join other Y6 students from around the school.
Timetabled lessons will include:
~ Small group intensive English language tuition delivered by an English as an Additional Language (EAL) specialist teacher (60% of the timetable).
~ Mathematics, Computing, PE and Music will be delivered by specialist subject teachers.
~ Other academic subjects will be integrated where appropriate within the intensive English programme, e.g. Science, Art, History and Geography.
What are the entry requirements?
The British School of Guangzhou is an academically rigorous school that offers opportunities to students with the right combination of positive attitude and high prior academic and personal attainment.
~ All students will be asked to provide copies of their most recent school reports and will undertake a short assessment interview with the Head of Primary or Head of Primary EAL.
~ Acceptance to the course does not guarantee progression to the school’s mainstream programme.
This is at the discretion of the Head of Primary and is subject to both a 90% attendance record and satisfactory academic progress.
What fees will apply?
Fees will be as standard for Upper Primary students with an annual 30,000 EAL cost added. An iPad will be provided to the student free of charge on admission for school use. All other costs, such as buses and uniform, will be applied as they would normally.
