ISM Secondary students recently participated in the world's first inteGIRLS online mathematics competition in the last week of May. The global competition was hosted from Washington DC and featured a set of twenty-one challenging puzzles, which were to be solved within the three days. Guilia, one of the participants, wrote a short blog post about her incredible experience.

On the weekend of 30th and 31st May, three other girls and I from the Year 10 Further Mathematics class participated in the inteGIRLS puzzle competition.

This competition is a yearly event that encourages girls to pursue their love for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), as it is often hard to feel motivated in such a male-dominated field.

The aim of the inteGIRLS community is to unite girls with a passion for mathematics and problem solving, as well as to encourage their individual development. It was a great challenge but its difficulty should definitely not be underestimated. The best part was having the chance to improve our teamwork skills and get an amazing feeling of satisfaction after solving each of the problems.

For all you girls out there, it is a fun experience and a great place to improve your problem-solving skills, which are a key ingredient to your success no matter what career you wish to pursue. I encourage every girl to take part next year - you won’t regret it. Oh and don’t worry boys, the girls can share the problems with you once the competition is over if you would like to have a go!
