Talking about our snacks during snack time has triggered off an interest in discussing healthy foods in our international Pre-Nursery class. The children wanted to know what foods were healthy and which were not. These discussions have been ongoing for several weeks now and have been extended by checking each other’s snack boxes each day for healthy food options.
The Swans class have also learned vitamins come from food and are important building blocks for their body, mind and growth. They probed their teachers to talk about various foods in their snack boxes to build and extend on their knowledge. This interest sparked us to do a hands on visual activity: Today the Swans made banana smoothies. They peeled the bananas, put them into the blender, poured in some milk and helped the teacher press the blender buttons! They watched, with fascination, as the bananas and milk swirled and mixed in the blender.
The best part? Getting to taste what they had made...and it was delicious! It was a great healthy start in the Swan class! Food preferences are shaped in early childhood and affect our children's eating habits for life. Starting early is important so that we can give the best chance to live healthy and successful lives. Leading by example and sharing knowledge will encourage our children to be able to make educated healthy choices.
