Learning Beyond the Classroom
Dear Parents,
Over the past few weeks, our students have taken part in a rich programme of learning opportunities that are enriching and add depth that extends beyond the classroom door. Our children are currently travelling back from Phuket FOBISIA sporting events, theatre visits in Hong Kong, and a trip on an open top Big Red Bus tour! These memorable excursions are powerful activators of the skills children need for the future.
Research from The Economist Intelligence Unit highlights problem solving, teamwork, communication and creativity as the most in demand skills for the evolving world of work. These are the very competencies our students develop when they compete collaboratively at FOBISIA, interpret complex narratives in theatre performances, or engage with real world challenges during off site learning.
The report also emphasises that students learn these skills most effectively when they are embedded in authentic, hands on contexts rather than taught in isolation. Experiences beyond school walls, whether working with teammates, navigating unfamiliar environments, or reflecting on a live performance naturally nurture critical thinking, adaptability and emotional intelligence, all identified as essential for children’s readiness for their futures.
As the World Economic Forum’s 2023 skills outlook echoes, young people will thrive when they can collaborate confidently, communicate clearly, and solve problems creatively. Our commitment to offering diverse learning opportunities ensures that every child has the chance to practise these skills in meaningful ways.
Chinese Debating Competition
Stepping beyond the classroom, our students embraced a valuable learning experience through their preparation for the debate competition. What began as simple curiosity about debating grew into the confidence to stand before an audience and articulate ideas clearly in Chinese. Along the way, they strengthened their critical thinking, refined the logic of their expression, and, most importantly, developed greater assurance in communicating fluently in Chinese.
Although we narrowly lost to ASHK by one point, our students impressed the judges with their quick thinking, teamwork, and respectful attitude. Congratulations to: Victoria– 6E, Bill Chen- 5E, Howe -6D, Daniel -5C. We were especially delighted that Daniel from Class 5C received the Best Debater award.
The experience was thoroughly enjoyable for all involved, with several students already expressing interest in continuing their debating journey. Ms. Wang and I were truly proud to accompany and support them, witnessing firsthand the confidence and growth that happens when learning extends beyond the classroom walls.
