Secondary Campus Weekly Update 16 Mar 2026

Dear Parents,

Over the past week, our school community has been bursting with energy, creativity, and connection as students engaged in a wide range of enriching experiences. From the excitement of our Pi Day interhouse Mathematics competition, where KS3 students showcased outstanding problem‑solving, collaboration, and a genuine passion for mathematics, to the inspiring international opportunities our learners embraced at the FOBISIA Junior Drama Festival in Taiwan, it has been a joy to see them growing in confidence, skill, and global awareness through theatre, teamwork, and creative exploration.

This week also saw the successful launch of STEAM Week, with students tackling real‑world design challenges set by MIT and engaging in hands‑on workshops led by our STEAM council. Their curiosity and innovation stood out in every activity—from underwater housing concepts to Martian engineering solutions and student‑led breakout challenges that brought science and creativity to life across the school.

As we look ahead, we are excited for upcoming community events, including our celebrations for the International Day of Happiness, our Year 9 Future‑Proof Choices webinar that supports families with IGCSE pathways, and the IB Visual Arts and Music Exhibition, where our senior students will share powerful, thought‑provoking work exploring themes of technology, identity, and change—accompanied by original musical responses from our talented young performers.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the wonderful events ahead as we continue to build a vibrant, connected school community together. Wishing all our families who celebrate, a joyful and blessed Eid Mubarak and St Patrick’s Day!

Kind regards,

Fiona Thorndike
Head of Secondary

In celebration of Pi Day, the interhouse maths competition brought together KS3 students in an exciting and engaging event that showcased their enthusiasm for mathematics. Students from all houses eagerly participated, demonstrating their problem-solving skills and love for numbers through a series of challenging activities centered around mathematics. The level of investment was evident as students collaborated, debated, and shared strategies, showing genuine passion and curiosity. Their enthusiasm not only highlighted their mathematical talents but also fostered a sense of community and friendly competition, making Pi Day a memorable and inspiring occasion for everyone involved.

On the 9th March, 18 students from Year 7 – Year 9 attended the FOBISIA Junior Drama Festival in Taiwan, where they met and worked with 9 other international schools from around Asia. For 3 days, students participated in exciting workshops led by visiting theater company, Red Leap, from New Zealand, and Drama specialists from a range of schools. Students worked in their companies to create a final performance with the theme of ‘visual storytelling’ showcasing the new skills and techniques learnt throughout the festival. Students had a fantastic time, learning new skills and networking with other FOBISIA member schools and students!

STEAM Week Reflection – Elliott Rees

It’s been a fantastic week celebrating STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Maths—a week designed to inspire and challenge our students across these exciting fields.

In lessons, our Key Stage 3 students have been tackling a challenge set directly by MIT. Professor Skylar Tibbits, from MIT’s School of Design, is renowned for creating self-assembling structures that adapt to extreme environments. He invited our students to design something suited to an environment of their choice. The results have been outstanding—from underwater houses to systems protecting solar panels from Martian sandstorms!

Outside the classroom, our STEAM student council demonstrated their strong leadership skills and organised a range of engaging workshops and activities. Highlights included form-time activities celebrating women in STEM, hands-on science experiments, wind turbine design challenges, and the ever-popular Curiosity Challenge treasure hunt.

Year 9 Future-Proof Choices: Guiding Year 9 IGCSE Selections for Tomorrow’s Jobs

We warmly invite you to join our webinar, led by Ms. Thomasson and Mr. Chang, as we continue our transition programme for our Year 9 students into Year 10, and into iGCSE programme. The focus of this webinar is to talk to you about the jobs, skills and characteristics needed to succeed in our ever-changing, dynamic world, to further support you in making the best decisions with your child(ren) regarding the iGCSE Pathways here at NAIS HK.

Upcoming University Visit: HKUST –Woojin Chang

We are excited to announce an excellent university visit scheduled for our Sixth Form students next week. On Tuesday, 17th March 2026, we will welcome the Senior Admission Manager from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). They will be meeting with our IB students to discuss campus life at HKUST, explore academic programs and answer any questions regarding the admissions process. Engaging directly with university representatives is a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn more about highly competitive local higher education pathways!

IB Visual Arts Exhibition and Music Performance – Ben Watt

Our Y13 students have been putting the final touches to their show this week. Their work explores personal subject matter and student's chosen themes include local and global issues. Our visual artists have been encouraged to consider ways to adapt and respond to the ever-changing times that we live through and where possible offer solutions to the problems that they are investigating. Students have chosen the title “Ctrl, Alt, Shift” to suggest ideas of empowerment and alternate ways of thinking to create change within their communities and further afield. The use of computer command keys suggests the role of technology in an unparalleled era of processing power, Ai and robotics.

We invite you to come and experience the explorations and makings of our students this week. This year is particularly exciting as the Year 13 musicians have responded to the Visual artist’s artwork and chosen themes. This soundscape will be played at the exhibition. The show promises to be an immersive and atmospheric experience.

We look forward to our community coming together to celebrate the achievements of our creative faculty.

In an impressive display, the U/14 Boys Badminton team triumphed over ICHK with a commanding 6-0 victory. The squad excelled in both singles and doubles matches, winning each contest with a decisive two sets to zero. However, the games were more competitive than the score suggests, with several rallies showcasing the skill and determination of both teams. Congratulations to the players!

U16 Boys Badminton

A strong team performance from our U16 Boys A team, saw them run out 6–0 winners at home against ISF. The singles were hard‑fought: Tony Chu battled through a nail‑biting first set that finished 24–22 and went on to take the match, showing real composure under pressure. After a loss in his previous match, Jaxton bounced back impressively to win his singles 2–0, demonstrating great resilience.

Our doubles pairings were outstanding, producing clinical performances and winning all doubles match 2–0. The whole squad showed excellent teamwork, focus, and match‑play throughout the evening. One more fixture remains against ASHK before the playoffs — the team will take plenty of confidence from tonight’s clean sweep. Go Knights!

ISSFHK Track and Field Mini Meet

On Thursday 12 March, ISSFHK’s Track & Field mini‑meet at Hammer Hill saw 90 of our students compete with great determination as they aimed to qualify for the championships against strong athletes from ASHK and HKA. The day was full of energy and excellent performances — special congratulations to Andrew B and Kasten C for their outstanding 100m sprints, the U16 boys 4x100m relay team for a powerful and well–executed race, and Efe for a superb shot put over 11m. We also enjoyed a thrilling 800m battle between Thor and Oscar that went right down to the line.

PE Staff were proud of every competitor’s effort, sportsmanship, and team spirit throughout the meet. Thank you to the parents who attended for your support — we’ll share qualification outcomes soon and look forward to building on this positive momentum as we prepare for the championships.
