What a mother noticed after watching her son find his feet in a new world

There is a particular kind of pride that is difficult to put into words. Not the pride of a certificate or a result, but the slower, quieter recognition that your child is becoming someone remarkable. Padi Wenceslao is a student at NAIS Manila. When he started secondary school, his mother Luanne noticed something shift. The drop-off hugs stopped. He wanted to be with his friends. She understood it. But understanding something and finding the words for it are not the same thing, and the moment to say so had never quite arrived. Padi sat his mother down at NAIS Manila, introduced himself as the interviewer of the day, and began asking questions she had not prepared for.
What followed was unscripted. Padi asked Luanne how she would describe him in three words. She said: talented, kind-hearted, and a true gentleman. He asked what she had noticed about how he had changed. She told him he was more confident now, that he knew what he wanted. He asked what she thought about the things he wanted. She said: we support your dreams. And then, toward the end, Padi gave his mother something she had not expected. He said: “I still care about you. A lot.” A teenage boy, on camera, telling his mother that growing up had not meant growing apart. When Luanne reached the end of what she wanted to say, the word she chose to describe her son was “equipped.” Ready for whatever comes his way.
It is the kind of exchange that rarely makes it onto a school’s website. Which is precisely why it should.
For families considering NAIS Manila and wondering what the experience of growing up here actually looks like, Padi and Luanne’s story is worth your time.
