The Moment She Will Always Cherish

Manasi came NAIS Manila to talk about her daughter. She did not expect her daughter to be the one asking the questions.

Gia is in her IGCSE year at Nord Anglia International School Manila. In the Are You Proud of Me? series, students sit their parents down on camera, unrehearsed, and ask them what they actually think. Gia started simply: describe me in three words. Manasi chose curious, creative, and confident, and she took time over each one. The curiosity had started young and never really stopped. The creativity showed in the routes Gia chose, never the obvious path. And the confidence she illustrated rather than described. “Look at you here taking my interview,” she told her. “So confident.”

When Gia asked how she had changed over the past year, Manasi went to the way her daughter approaches her IGCSE studies. In her own generation, she said, studying meant reading until you could repeat it back. What she sees in Gia is different: a hunger to understand concepts rather than just to arrive at the answer. She has been watching that shift happen.

Then Gia asked when she had realised she had grown up. Manasi laughed and said “not yet.” Then she went to a memory from school, a single moment when her daughter stepped into something she had not seen coming. “That really left me impressed about the school,” she said, “impressed about you. That moment, I will always cherish.”
