Student Leadership Sets the Tone

STEAM Week at Nord Anglia School Jakarta began with energy and anticipation. Our Year 6 students took centre stage during the launch assembly, leading the entire school through an introduction to a week filled with science investigations, engineering challenges and creative problem-solving.

This wasn't a teacher-led presentation. Year 6 students planned and delivered the assembly themselves, demonstrating the confidence and communication skills that come from our commitment to creating future-ready learners. Their enthusiasm was contagious, setting the perfect tone for the week ahead.

Understanding STEAM

Year 6 students began by explaining what STEAM means. Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics aren't separate subjects that live in isolation. They connect, overlap and work together to solve real-world problems.

Students shared examples of how STEAM appears in everyday life. Building a bridge requires Engineering and Mathematics. Creating a video game needs technology and creativity. Designing sustainable cities combines science, art and problem-solving. These connections helped younger students understand why STEAM matters beyond the classroom.

The presentation also highlighted the difference between Science and Engineering. Science asks questions and seeks to understand how the world works. Engineering takes that knowledge and uses it to design solutions and create things that improve our lives. Both are essential, and STEAM Week would give students opportunities to experience both approaches.

Learning from Real Experts

The assembly featured special guests who brought STEAM to life through their own career experiences. An IT Engineer, who is also a parent at our school, joined the presentation to share insights about working in cloud-based services. He explained how his job involves solving technical problems, collaborating with teams across different countries and constantly learning new skills.

More importantly, he emphasised how much he enjoyed learning about STEAM when he was younger. He shared how the concepts he learned in school apply to his daily work and how curiosity and creativity remain essential in his career. This message resonated with students, showing them that what they learn now has real relevance to their future paths.

A Volcanologist, another member of our school parent community, also made a cameo appearance, introducing students to the fascinating world of studying volcanoes. He explained how scientists observe volcanic activity, looking for patterns and trends that help predict eruptions and keep communities safe. Students learned that volcanologists study different volcanoes around the world, comparing behaviours and gathering data from remote locations.

These guest appearances embodied our brand promise of helping students create their future. Seeing real professionals who use STEAM in their careers helped students envision possibilities for themselves, whatever they choose to be or do in life.

Building Excitement Across Year Groups

As Year 6 students wrapped up the assembly, anticipation filled the room. Younger students were excited to begin their own STEAM challenges. They had questions about what activities they would do and couldn't wait to start investigating, building and experimenting.

The student-led format made the launch particularly powerful. When peers present information with genuine enthusiasm, it creates a different kind of engagement than adult-led assemblies. Year 6 students modelled curiosity, confidence and communication skills that inspire younger students to develop these qualities themselves.

This approach reflects our education driven by values. Year 6 students demonstrated collaboration in planning their presentation, creativity in how they engaged the audience and global citizenship by connecting STEAM to real-world impact. They showed respect for their audience and resilience in taking on the challenge of leading a whole-school assembly.

A Week of Discovery Begins

The launch assembly succeeded in its goal. Students left excited, curious and ready to engage with STEAM challenges ahead. Year 6 had set high expectations for the week whilst making STEAM feel accessible and relevant to every year group.

Over the coming days, students would tackle engineering challenges, conduct science investigations and showcase their learning at a Science Fair. However, the foundation was laid in this opening assembly where student leadership, real-world connections and genuine enthusiasm combined to create anticipation for meaningful learning experiences.

STEAM Week had officially begun and the entire school was ready to explore, create and discover.
