We are looking for an experienced and inspiring Spanish/French teacher to join the Languages team. Class sizes are small and the students are motivated and enthusiastic, enjoying a lively approach to the subject through a wide range of teaching and learning techniques. The ideal candidate will convey enthusiasm for the subject and contribute collaboratively in the continued development of the curriculum.
Spanish is currently a popular and well-established subject in the IB Diploma programme at St. Andrews, with many students studying Spanish Ab Initio, and we are now developing this with younger students, introducing Spanish this year in Key Stages 2 and 3, where students can now choose to study either French, Spanish or Mandarin. Students continue with their chosen language until the end of Year 9, when they can then opt to study languages at IGCSE.
The High School Senior Studies programme for Years 12 and 13 has the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme as its academic backbone, in which all students have to study two Language or Literature subjects. Students who have studied a language at IGCSE can choose to study it as a Language B, while those students who have not studied a language at IGCSE, or who have studied Thai, can choose to study French, Spanish or Mandarin Ab Initio.
French is taught both as a modern language and as a first language for those children who are native speakers, and we are currently investigating offering Spanish as a first language too at some point in the near future. The ideal candidate would be a native Spanish speaker who is able to also offer French across a wide variety of both ages and abilities.
We pride ourselves on being an inclusive school, and has an excellent reputation for supporting children with special educational needs. Experience of teaching children with dyslexia, mild autism, ADHD etc. would be very good prior experience for a teacher wishing to join our team. Our Mission Statement commits us to meeting ‘all the needs of the individual learner’, and this applies equally to those students targeting the very highest grades at IGCSE and IB. Our work on Assessment for Learning, Growth Mindsets and, more recently, High Performance Learning is a very important part of this.
Our school is committed to developing a Virtual Learning Environment using Moodle. There is a strong commitment to integrating the teaching and use of ICT skills into all areas of the curriculum, where appropriate. All Languages classrooms have data projectors and interactive whiteboards and access to the internet, with a laptop cart, iPads and ICT labs bookable when required.
As well as their teaching, all teachers are also expected to contribute positively to both the school’s pastoral systems and the extra-curricular programme, offering an Extra-Curricular Activity that either supports or extends the students’ learning in their subject area, or from another area of personal interest.
The closing date for application is 1st February 2016.
