Sport: Flames and Marlins shine

Our Flames and Marlins teams achieved new heights over the weekend with fantastic results in football and swimming

Primary School Sport

We had a massive weekend of sport with the FOBISIA swimming on 20 & 21 January at Bangkok Patana and the the Harrow International Football 7s.   Well done to all our STA competitors.

This week we have further football fixtures with friendlies against Singapore International School and we take our A and b teams to Harrow on Wednesday.

Please remember our weekend sports opportunities with gymnastics, yoga,  girls football and basketball.  If you like to know more about any of these activities please email damon.se@standrews.ac.th

It has been a busy week for our footballers.   First, our  U9 boys finally got their hands on the Harrow Bangkok Cup trophy after a good win over Shrewsbury in the final played last Tuesday @ Soccer Pro.  All our teams are playing some brilliant football and we look to continue to improve and develop with other tournaments in the near future.

Next was the big international football 2-day tournament at Harrow.  The level is always very high and the children were up against schools from Hong Kong, Singapore, China and other parts of Asia. As always our children played some great football and had their greatest success this school year. We won 2 (U11 Girls and U9 Boys) out of the 4 Primary tournaments and picked up a 2nd place (U9 Girls) and a 3rd place finish (U11 Boys) in the other tournaments. With such fantastic and high quality opposition this was a brilliant achievement. Well done to all the players, coaches and support of our STA parents.

It was a very good weekend for our STA swimmers at the FOBISIA Swimming 2018, ranking fourth overall (from 24 teams) on team points. Individually, we won trophies with 2nd place and two 3rd places with overall individual high points scored in the 10yrs, 11yrs and 12yrs age category.  Well done to all our Marlins.

Thank you to all the children who came to the badminton trials last week. It is great to see so many children wanting to play sport at STA. For the children who do not make the squads or who would like to play more badminton, there is an open session on Tuesdays after school from 2.45 -3.45pm.  If you would like your daughter or son to take part in the open badminton on a Tuesday then please email Khung Seung at  seung.sa@standrews.ac.th will n the 23 January.

High School Sport

3 on 3 basketball

Saturday Club and Flames Basketball Academy

Our Saturday training continues to grow, with nearly 150 students attending each Saturday to develop their basketball skills. There is a great atmosphere at the weekend and it’s a real pleasure to coach our amazing STA ballers and watch their progress.

If you’d like your child to be a part of this training, please contact Mr. Ollie (ollie.fa@standrews.ac.th). It’s never too late to start the journey!

U13 Girls Football

Due to popular demand, we have now started U13G Football on a Saturday morning. If you’d like your daughter to join, please email Mr. Ollie (ollie.fa@standrews.ac.th) .

Sports Days

As an addendum to last week’s update, we’re planning our annual House Sports Days for this term. To accommodate the large numbers in school, we’ll again have split days for all Year groups as follows:

  • 27 February: Year 7
  • 28 February: Year 8
  • 8 March: Year 10
  • 9 March: Year 9

This means that everyone will participate in a full athletics programme. In keeping with our approach to offer non-competitive roles, there will be a limited number of marshall places available for those who would rather help organise than compete.

Training resumes this week and continues until we leave for Phuket. If your child is part of the team, please try to ensure that they are present for all Friday training sessions. Thank you.

ECA Sport

We’re pleased to see so many students engage in extra-curricular sport in addition to the hundreds who train as part of a Flames or Marlins squad. Together with our options programme in PE - whereby some students select which activities they engage in and the emphasis is on recreational participation and independence - we feel this is a positive indicator of the approach of St Andrews students to engaging in a healthy, active lifestyle.

We have non-selective activities in all of our major sports: football, basketball, swimming, tennis. There is also yoga, table tennis, rock climbing and fitness, providing a broad range of activities to suit all tastes.

BASE Fitness

We’re pleased to see BASE continue to offer functional fitness training to students, staff and parents alike. They are now running two sessions for staff, two for parents, two for our elite athletes and two ECAs per week. If you’d like to get involved (either you or your child), please email Mr. Ollie (ollie.fa@standrews.ac.th).
