Why Teaching Metacognition to Young Students Makes a Difference

This week, our EAL students have been actively engaged in a range of exciting topics designed to expand their vocabulary, deepen their understanding of grammar, and strengthen their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

The Pre-Nursery children are so full of feelings, and are immersed in a profound exploration of their emotions. We started the week deeply focused on the vital skills of naming and recognising emotions, providing the children with a rich vocabulary to label their feelings, transforming overwhelming sensations into identifiable concepts like “frustrated,” “excited,” “calm,” and “proud.”

It has been a busy and dynamic week for all students in Chinese classrooms. Let’s look at some of the highlights of learning and activities there. The children in Nursery learned about colours. They discussed their favourite colours and discovered that they can create new ones by mixing different colours...

This week in Nursery it has been full of creativity, discovery, and self-expression! The children have been learning all about patterns - spotting them in everyday objects and creating their own in art, construction, and play.

This month in EAL, our students have been busy exploring exciting topics that connect language learning with the wider curriculum. Each year group has been practising new vocabulary, speaking in full sentences, and building confidence in reading and writing while having fun with their class themes.

What a fantastic start we’ve had to our ASA Sports Leagues this year! To make things even more exciting, we’ve revamped the leagues by introducing team names, logos, slogans, and descriptions - adding an extra layer of identity and pride for our students. And after Week 1, it’s safe to say the competition is already off to a thrilling start!

Our current topic, “Amazing Me”, is a wonderful theme that helps children learn more about themselves and the world around them. It encourages them to think about their bodies, their emotions, their families, and their communities. At this age, children are beginning to develop a stronger sense of identity and understanding of their feelings, so this topic gives them the language and tools to express themselves in positive ways.
