In Hungarian Literature lessons, Year 6 have been reading János vitéz; a piece of narrative poetry. Last week students had the chance to write a letter in the name of the main character, Jancsi, to his beloved Iluska who he had to leave behind in their village.

Jancsi is having the adventure of his life and becoming a great soldier, but all he can think about is his love. It is always a pleasure to see students engaged in reading a story, writing about it and retelling it, but I would like to highlight one piece of work that shows a lot of creativity. Adam Sabjanyi (Year 6 Amber) thought beyond the box and did not only write a regular love letter, he chose to write a verse epistle.

Drága Iluskám!

Hiányzol nekem, de nagyon,

És valamit be kell vallanom.

Élni nélküled én nem tudok.

Katonaként bejártam eget és földet,

De nem láttalak téged.

Zsiványokat gyújtogattam,

Katonákhoz csatlakoztam,

De te rád nem bukkantam.

Kedvesem, te gyönyörű lány vagy,

És remélem megtalállak.

Kukorica Jancsi

A rough translation:

My dearest Iluska,

I miss you a lot

And there is something I have to admit.

Without you I cannot live.

I have been all over the Earth and sky as a soldier,

But I couldn’t find you.

I lit bandits on fire,

I joined the army,

But I did not come upon you.

My dear, you are a beautiful girl,

And I really hope to find you.
